What are filial piety and etiquette?

Filial Piety in Korea
Although Korean society has undergone many changes over time, the values and culture that have been passed down through tradition still influence the daily lives of Koreans today. A representative example of this is filial piety and etiquette.
효: filial piety (The devoted support and caring for one’s parents)
끼치다: to cause (an influence) (To bring about an influence on society or other people through something)
예절: etiquette, social manners (The humble and proper behaviors or attitudes that people must observe in social life)

In Korea, where Confucian culture has had a strong influence, filial piety which means serving and bringing joy to one’s parents is highly valued. Although many children, as they grow up, end up living apart from their parents due to employment, marriage, or other reasons, they still visit their parents in person during holidays or on their parents’ birthdays. This culture stems from the idea of filial piety. Filial piety applies not only to living parents but also to deceased ancestors. For this reason, many people visit their ancestors’ graves or charnel houses to pay their respects during holidays. Filial piety also extends to behaviors that show respect and reverence toward other elders.
섬기다: to serve, to care for
성장하다: to grow up, to develop
추모: remembrance, memorial
공경하다: to revere, to respect (To treat elders with reverence and honor)
이어지다: to be passed down, to be continued

In Korea, it is common to see people giving up their seats to elderly passengers on buses or subways, or helping them carry heavy bags. This is an example that shows how the Confucian culture of treating elders with respect and courtesy has been passed down to the present day.
들어주다: to carry something for someone
공손히: politely, respectfully
모시다: to treat with respect, to serve (To receive and honor someone in a position of higher status or respect)

Etiquette in Korea
Koreans place great importance on etiquette in their relationships with others. Etiquette refers to the words and behaviors that express respect when interacting with other people.

예절: etiquette, manners
말투: way of speaking, tone of speech
가리키다: to indicate, to refer to (To point out or imply a certain person, thing, or content)

In general, when greeting an elder, people bow their heads. When dining with an elder, they wait for the elder to pick up their spoon or chopsticks first. When handing something to or receiving something from an elder, they use both hands. On occasions such as holidays or weddings, they bow deeply to their parents and other elders.
나누다: to share, to exchange (To exchange words, conversations, greetings, etc.)
숙이다: to bow, to lower (one’s head)
건네다: to hand over, to pass
비롯하다: to start with, to lead, to be the first

Etiquette is not only necessary when dealing with elders. When meeting someone for the first time or in formal situations, people use honorific language with each other regardless of their respective positions or ages. In particular, language etiquette is considered the most fundamental aspect of relationships with others and is strongly emphasized. For this reason, both at home and at school, children are taught from a young age to develop the habit of using honorifics correctly.
각자: each person, individually
기르다: to cultivate, to develop, to nurture

What is lifelong education?

The Meaning and Scope of Lifelong Education
Many people continue studying even after completing all their schooling, while working or after retirement. This is because, in order to respond to the rapid social changes such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution and to achieve self-realization in line with increasing life expectancy, it is necessary to learn new knowledge or skills. The advancement rates to middle school and high school are nearly 100%, and the rate of entering university also approaches 70%. The university entrance rate in Korea is much higher than the OECD average of around 40%. Academic credentials are regarded as one of the important means to elevate one’s social status, and in particular, there is a widespread tendency to think that graduating from university is advantageous for finding employment or getting married. As a result, competition to enter prestigious universities is extremely fierce, which leads to a high level of entrance exam stress and a heavy burden of spending on private education.

Methods of University Admission
When seeking to enter university, applicants can either apply through early admission, which mainly relies on the student record (school life record book), or through regular admission, which mainly relies on the score from the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). The CSAT is considered the most important exam required for university entrance; it is held every November, and anyone who is expected to graduate from high school, has already graduated, or possesses an equivalent academic qualification is eligible to take it.
생활기록부: school life record book, a student record that includes personal details, academic performance, school enrollment and graduation history.
수시 모집: early admission, a university recruitment system held before the main standardized test.

Since each university has different methods of selecting students, applicants must review the admissions guidelines provided by each university and apply accordingly. Some universities include "children from multicultural families" as an eligibility criterion in their selection, and overseas Koreans, foreigners, and marriage immigrants may apply through the "Special Admission for Overseas Koreans and Foreigners". 01.
What are the characteristics of the Korean education system?

The Korean Education System and Major Academic Schedules (Academic Calendar)
Primary and secondary education in Korea consists of six years of elementary school, three years of middle school, and three years of high school, and education is provided free of charge. Among these, the six years of elementary school and the three years of middle school are compulsory education periods. Educational institutions are classified according to the entity that establishes and operates them: national schools (established by the state), public schools (by local governments), and private schools (by corporations or individuals). Unlike public schools, which assign students to schools near their homes, national and private educational institutions select students separately based on specific criteria or by lottery. Educational activities are operated by dividing the year into the first and second semesters; the first semester begins in early March, and the second semester starts in late August to early September.
일정: schedule
학사: academic affairs (matters related to school education and administration)

School Educational Activities
The primary and secondary education curriculum largely consists of regular subjects (such as Korean language, mathematics, and social studies) and creative experiential activities (self-directed activities, club activities, volunteer work, and career exploration). In principle, one class session lasts 40 minutes in elementary school, 45 minutes in middle school, and 50 minutes in high school, but the duration can be flexibly adjusted depending on the situation. School education is conducted not only through lessons held in classrooms, playgrounds, libraries, and auditoriums but also through field experiential learning, such as direct observation, field trips, and site visits. Since field experiential learning can also be carried out individually by each family, it is necessary to apply in advance for off-campus experiential learning. In addition to the regular curriculum, various “after-school programs” are operated to help develop students’ talents and aptitudes and to reduce the burden of private education expenses.

What kinds of systems are there to support childbirth and childcare?

Systems Supporting Childbirth
In Korea, in order to encourage childbirth and reduce the economic burden of childrearing, the government provides financial support for expenses related to pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare. When a woman becomes pregnant, the government partially covers the costs needed for prenatal care and childbirth through the National Happiness Card. Pregnant women can also receive public health center services. All pregnant women (including marriage immigrants) can receive free prenatal check-ups simply by registering at a health center, and can also receive nutritional supplements needed during pregnancy. In addition, depending on the health center in each region, there is a variety of support services and educational programs for pregnant women. After childbirth, each local government provides childbirth subsidies or congratulatory grants. For detailed information, you can inquire at your city hall, district office, or county office.

How can people use medical institutions in Korea?

Types of Medical Institutions and How to Use Them
There are various types of medical institutions, including neighborhood clinics, public health centers, and general hospitals. If you catch a cold or have mild symptoms like indigestion, you can go to a neighborhood clinic for treatment. Public health centers are public healthcare institutions operated by the government to protect the health of local residents and to prevent and manage diseases. You can get vaccinations or various disease tests there, and the medical fees are cheaper than those at regular hospitals. If you receive treatment at a neighborhood clinic but do not get better, or if you need more detailed examinations, you can get a referral from the clinic or health center and go to a general hospital for further treatment.

Health Insurance System
Korea operates a health insurance system in which individuals pay a fixed monthly premium based on their income and assets. By enrolling in the health insurance system, people can receive medical services such as disease-related examinations, treatments, and childbirth at a lower cost, as the National Health Insurance Service covers a portion of the expenses at hospitals and pharmacies. Employees at workplaces are generally eligible for a free health check-up once every two years. All citizens are required to enroll in the health insurance system, which is divided into workplace subscribers and regional subscribers. Family members of workplace or regional subscribers can also receive the same health insurance benefits as dependents if certain conditions are met.

What are the distinctive features of cities in Korea?

Characteristics and changes of cities

Urbanization in Korea began in earnest after industrialization took place in the 1960s. From the 1970s, more than half of the population began living in cities, and today, over 90% of the total population resides in urban areas. Cities offer a convenient lifestyle as they are home to many businesses, universities, public institutions, medical facilities, and cultural facilities...

Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi, which make up the capital region, account for only about 12% of the national land area, but approximately 50% of the total population lives there, making it a representative urbanized area. Many people also live in regional metropolitan cities such as Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Ulsan.

국토: national territory (land under a country's sovereignty)
면적: area, land area
불과하다: to be no more than, to be merely
광역시: metropolitan city (a large city directly governed by the central government)

To disperse the functions concentrated in major cities, many satellite cities have been developed, especially around Seoul. Bundang and Ilsan serve residential functions, Gwacheon handles administrative functions, Ansan and Bucheon are known for their industrial areas, and Dongducheon and Osan are examples of areas with military facilities. Recently, a phenomenon of counter-urbanization has also emerged, as people move to areas surrounding major cities in search of cleaner and more pleasant environments.

분산: dispersion, distribution
위성 도시: satellite city (a medium or small city located around a major city, sharing part of its functions)

Urban problems and solutions

Urban problems occur in many cities. Traffic, environment, and housing issues are representative examples. To address traffic problems such as congestion, lack of public transportation, and insufficient parking facilities, measures such as expanding public transportation systems, transfer discounts for public transport, exclusive bus lanes, and congestion charges are being implemented. To solve environmental problems like air pollution and water pollution, efforts are being made to save energy, separate waste for recycling, and regulate disposable products. Meanwhile, to resolve housing shortages and problems with old housing, measures such as providing public rental housing, building new towns, and carrying out urban redevelopment projects are being undertaken.

[KIIP 5 기본] Lesson 5: 주거 Housing

What types of housing do Koreans mostly live in?

Types of Housing

The types of housing in which Koreans live can be largely divided into single-family housing (general houses, multi-household houses, etc.) and multi-family housing (multi-unit houses, row houses, apartments, etc.). A single-family house usually refers to a type of house built individually so that one household can live independently. Single-family housing also includes multi-household houses that are built to allow several households to live in separate, independent spaces. A multi-household house is a building with three floors or less, where the entire ownership belongs to the landlord, and the other households live there as tenants. Multi-family housing refers to a type of house in which multiple households can live independently within one building. Examples include multi-unit houses, row houses, and apartments. Unlike multi-household houses, in multi-unit houses, each part of the building is owned by different individuals. A row house is a house of four floors or less, and sometimes includes residential space on the first basement floor. Row houses tend to have a larger total building area than multi-unit houses. Apartments are multi-family houses with five floors or more and are often built on a large scale to accommodate hundreds or even thousands of households.

다가구 주택: multi-household house, house for multiple families
공동 주택: multi-family housing, collective housing (a type of housing built to allow two or more households to live separately within one building)
다세대 주택: multi-unit house
연립 주택: row house
소유권: ownership
세: rent (the act of paying to borrow and use another person’s property or building)

Changes in Housing Culture

The housing style in Korea is changing rapidly. In the past, most houses were single-family homes, but as the population concentrated in cities, the number of households living in multi-family housing has surpassed those in single-family houses. In particular, apartments are usually built in locations with convenient transportation and are equipped with various amenities such as playgrounds and fitness rooms, so many people prefer living in apartments. However, conflicts between neighbors can become serious due to inter-floor noise. Recently, as the number of one-person and two-person households increases, the demand for studio apartments and small houses is also growing. Some people who are preparing for retirement or who want to live in a pleasant natural environment build and live in country houses in quiet areas near big cities.

Because housing prices in large cities are expensive, it is difficult for ordinary people to find homes. Therefore, the government builds multi-family housing such as apartments so that people who are economically disadvantaged can buy or rent homes at low prices. Public rental housing is provided not only for groups in need of social protection such as basic livelihood security recipients, but also for young people including university students, newlyweds, and entry-level workers (people who have recently started working) through rental housing (Happy Housing). There is also rental housing (Public Silver Housing) for low-income elderly people living alone, as well as rental housing for multicultural families and single-parent families, supporting housing stability for a variety of people.

계층: social class, stratum, group
사회초년생: entry-level worker, newcomer to society
젊은 층: younger generation, young people
독거노인: elderly person living alone
