베네치아 은사자상 품은 ‘가능한 사랑’···이창동 감독 “관객이 영화 완성” - ‘Possible Love’ Wins Venice Silver Lion···Director Lee Chang-dong Says “Audience Completes the Film”

이창동 감독이 신작 '가능한 사랑'으로 제83회 베네치아영화제에서 심사위원대상(은사자상)을 품고 돌아왔다. Director Lee Chang-dong has made a triumphant return after winning the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at this year's Venice Film Festival for his latest film "Possible Love."

이 감독은 21일 서울 용산구 CGV 용산아이파크몰에서 열린 언론시사회 및 기자간담회에서 “기쁘고 영광스럽게 생각한다” 면서 “상은 결과물일 뿐, 이 영화가 세상에 나와 관객들과 처음 만났을 때 어떻게 받아들여질지가 훨씬 중요했다”며 은사자상 트로피를 들어보였다.

At a media screening and news conference on Sept. 21 at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul's Yongsan-gu District, Lee proudly held up his trophy.

"I'm delighted and honored," he said. "The award is just the result; what was far more important was how this film would be received after its release and the audience's first impressions."

이어 “쉽고 자극적인 영화가 아닌데도 관객들이 영화가 던지는 질문과 이야기하려는 바를 느끼고 반응해주는 것이 표정과 태도에서 느껴져 정말 다행이고 기뻤다”고 덧댔다.

"It's not an easy or provocative film, but I felt truly relieved and happy to see—through their expressions and demeanor—that the audience engaged with the questions the movie raises and the message it wants to convey."

이날 기자간담회에는 이 감독을 비롯해 배우 설경구, 조인성, 조여정이 참석했다. 미국 뉴욕에서 연극 '벚꽃동산' 공연 중인 전도연은 화상으로 함께했다.

Lee and his cast Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong attended the event. Actor Jeon Do-yeon, who is performing in the play "The Cherry Orchard" in New York, joined via videoconference.

조인성은 베네치아영화제에서 화제가 됐던 외신기자들의 이 감독 친필 사인 요청 해프닝을 전했다. 그는 “공식 기자회견이라 엄숙한 분위기였는데 외신기자들이 단상으로 몰려들어 당황했다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “올해 제가 운 좋게 칸영화제도 다녀왔고 베네치아도 다녀왔는데 칸에서는 느끼지 못했던 풍경이었다”고 돌이켰다. 그는 “이 감독과 한국영화의 위상을 베네치아에서도 확인해 반갑고 감사했다” 는 소회를 밝혔다.

Zo recalled an incident that grew into a hot topic at the Venice festival when foreign reporters asked for Lee's autograph.

"It was an official news conference so the atmosphere was solemn, but I was taken aback when foreign correspondents flocked to the podium," Zo said. "This year, I was lucky enough to attend both the Cannes Film Festival and Venice, but I didn't experience this scene at Cannes."

"I was delighted and grateful to see director Lee and the prestige of Korean films recognized in Venice."

'가능한 사랑'은 해고 노동자와 계급 갈등을 축으로 인간관계와 자본, 영화를 만드는 사람의 윤리와 태도에 질문을 던진다. "Possible Love" uses laid-off workers and class conflict as its central themes to evoke questions on human relationships, capital, and the ethics and attitudes of filmmakers.

대기업에서 정리해고된 호석(설경구)과 아내 미옥(전도연), 이들 부부를 인터뷰하며 다큐멘터리를 만드는 감독 예지(조여정)와 부유한 남편 상우(조인성)는 서로 다른 결핍과 욕망을 품은 채 상대의 삶을 탐한다. 특히 영화 속 예지는 남편 상우의 자본에서 독립하고자 하지만 완전히 자유로울 수 없는 인물로 그려진다.

Ho-seok (played by Sol), who recently got laid off from a corporation, and his wife Mi-ok (Jeon) cross paths with Ye-ji (Cho), a director who interviews the couple for a documentary she is making, and her wealthy husband Sang-woo (Zo). Each harbors unmet needs and desires and covet the other's life. Ye-ji is portrayed as seeking independence from her husband's wealth but cannot break free.

이 감독은 “어떻게 보면 영화감독으로서 저도 자본과 결혼하고 사는 삶인지 모르겠다” 며 “자본의 도움 없이는 자기 이야기를 할 수 없는 창작자의 굴레 속에서도 타인의 고통을 단순한 재료로 착취하지 않고 진실되게 사랑하는 것이 과연 가능한가 묻고 싶었다”고 연출 의도를 설명했다.

"I wonder if as a film director, I'm also living a life where I'm also married to capital," Lee said. "I wanted to ask if it's truly possible—even within the constraints faced by creators who cannot tell their stories without capital—to genuinely love others instead of exploiting their suffering as mere material."

배우들은 서로 다른 환경에 놓인 인물을 연기하며 자본과 계급에 영향을 받는 방식을 고민했다고 털어놨다. The actors said that in portraying characters with different circumstances, they reflected on how capital and class influenced them.

설경구는 호석을 두고 “자아가 완전히 깨진 상태에서 수치심과 죄책감, 분노, 열등감 등 복합적인 감정을 가졌을 것” 이라며 “경제적으로 여유로운 상우 부부를 만나면서 느끼는 위축감과 거부감을 염두에 뒀다”고 했다.

"With his sense of self completely shattered, he likely harbored a complex mix of emotions like shame, guilt, anger and an inferiority complex," Sol said about his character.

"I kept in mind the sense of intimidation and aversion he felt when meeting the affluent Sang-woo and his wife."

전도연은 “돈과 계급은 사람의 가치관을 무너뜨리고 그 사람의 가치를 앗아갈 수도 있다” 며 “미옥은 그로부터 자신의 가치와 가족을 지켜내려는 인물”이라고 짚었다.

"Money and social class can undermine a person's values and strip them of their self-worth," Jeon added. "Mi-ok is someone who strives to protect her own worth and her family from that."

이 감독은 관객과의 만남을 앞두고 “영화를 결국 완성시키는 것은 관객이라고 생각한다. 관객들 속에서 우리 영화가 좀 더 힘 있고 의미 있게 살아갈 수 있었으면 좋겠다” 는 말을 잊지 않았다.

"I believe that the audience is what ultimately completes a film," the director said ahead of his work's premiere. "I hope that our movie can live on with even greater strength and meaning among its viewers."

'가능한 사랑'은 오는 11월 6일 넷플릭스(Netflix)로 전 세계 시청자를 찾아간다. Netflix will release "Possible Love" worldwide on Nov. 6.

이창동 감독 신작 '가능한 사랑'이 제83회 베네치아영화제에서 심사위원대상을 받았다. Director Lee Chang-dong's new feature "Possible Love" is the first Korean film to win the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at the Venice International Film Festival of Italy.

'가능한 사랑'은 12일(현지 시간) 이탈리아 베네치아에서 열린 영화제 폐막식에서 심사위원대상(은사자상) 수상작으로 호명됐다. 이 감독이 베네치아영화제에서 수상한 것은 2002년 '오아시스'로 감독상(은사자상)을 받은 이후 24년 만이다.

His work was announced on Sept. 12 as the winner of the honor at the closing ceremony, Lee's first prize at the festival in over two decades since he won Best Director for "Oasis" in 2002.

이 감독은 수상 무대에서 "노동이 사라져 가는 시대에, 사람과 사람 사이의 관계가 끊어져 가는 시대에 저는 영화로 무엇을 할 수 있는지, 영화가 무엇을 해야만 하는지 질문하기 위해 이 영화를 만들었다"며 "이 상을 주신 것은 그 질문을 계속하라는 뜻으로 알겠다"고 소감을 밝혔다.

"At a time when labor is disappearing and relationships between people are breaking down, I made this film to ask what I can do through cinema and what cinema must do," he said in his acceptance speech. "I consider this award a sign to keep asking these questions."

'가능한 사랑'은 이 감독이 '버닝'(2018) 이후 8년 만에 내놓은 신작이자 첫 넷플릭스 영화다. 미옥(전도연)과 해고당한 남편 호석(설경구)이 해고 노동자를 취재하는 다큐멘터리 감독 예지(조여정)와 그의 부유한 집안 출신 남편 상우(조인성)를 만나면서 계급적 배경이 다른 이들이 서로의 삶과 욕망을 마주하는 이야기를 그렸다.

"Possible Love" -- Lee's first feature film in eight years since 2018's "Burning" and his first made for Netflix -- is about Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and her laid-off husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and their meeting with documentary director Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), who is working on a piece on laid-off workers, and her husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung), who comes from a wealthy family.

The film depicts how different socioeconomic backgrounds affect one's life and desires.

영화는 폐막식에 앞서 국제비평가연맹상도 받으며 작품성을 인정받았다. It also earned the FIPRESCI Prize of the Germany-based International Federation of Film Critics before the closing ceremony.

올해 베네치아영화제 최고상인 황금사자상은 마이 엘투키 감독의 ‘우먼 언노운’에 돌아갔다. 감독상(은사자상)은 일리야 흐르자놉스키 감독의 '다우'가 받았다.

The Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice festival, went to "Woman Unknown" by director May el-Toukhy, and the Silver Lion for Best Director to Ilya Khrzhanovsky for "Dau."

한편, 이재명 대통령은 13일 이 감독의 수상에 "지난 뤼미에르 서밋에서 감독님과 배우분들을 뵈었을 때 작품에 대한 현지의 뜨거운 관심을 직접 전해 들었다” 며 “그때의 기대가 좋은 결실로 이어져 더욱 기쁘다”고 축하했다.

President Lee Jae Myung on Sept. 13 conveyed his congratulations to the director, saying, "When I met the director and cast at the recent Lumiere Summit, I directly heard from them the immense local interest in the film," adding, "I'm all the more pleased to see the expectations I had at the time bear positive results."

이어 “이번 수상을 계기로 한국 영화의 다양성이 더욱 넓어지고, 좋은 작품들이 세계 관객들과 더 많이 만날 수 있기를 바란다”며 “앞으로도 한국 영화의 빛나는 여정을 응원하겠다”고 덧붙였다.

"I hope this award is an opportunity to widen the diversity of Korean cinema and enable more outstanding works to reach global audiences," the president added. "I will continue backing the remarkable journey of Korean cinema."

부산국제영화제(BIFF), 세계 최상위권 ‘A-리스트 영화제’로 격상···제31회 부산영화제 개막 - Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Upgraded to Global A-List Festival···31st Edition Set to Open

세계 최상위권 ‘A-리스트 영화제’로 격상된 부산국제영화제(BIFF)가 한층 높아진 국제적 위상을 발판으로 다음 달 개막을 향한 닻을 올렸다.

The annual Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), now upgraded to an "A-list" global cinematic event, is gearing up for its latest edition next month.

정한석 부산국제영화제 집행위원장은 1일 서울 중구 대한상공회의소에서 열린 BIFF 공식 개최 기자회견에서 “지난해 30회 영화제 이후 BIFF의 국제적 위상이 수직 상승한 것이 사실”이라며 “국제적 인정과 교류 등을 BIFF가 맡게 됐다는 점을 말씀드리고자 한다”고 말했다.

At a news conference for the event at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul's Jung-gu District, BIFF Director Jung Hanseok said, "BIFF's global status has indeed skyrocketed since its 30th edition last year."

" I emphasize that BIFF has taken on the role of raising international recognition and exchange."

지난 3월 국제영화제작자연맹(FIAPF)은 BIFF를 세계 최상위 등급인 ‘A-리스트’ 영화제 17곳에 새롭게 포함했다.

In March, the International Federation of Film Producers Associations added BIFF to its list of the world’s top 17 "A-list" movie festivals.

이와 함께 지난 5월 BIFF 경쟁부문 최고상인 ‘부산 어워드’ 대상 수상작은 미국 아카데미 국제장편영화상 출품 자격을 새롭게 인정받았다. 아카데미가 국제장편영화상 출품 자격을 인정한 영화제는 BIFF를 비롯해 칸, 베네치아, 베를린, 선댄스, 토론토 6개뿐이다.

The winner of the Busan Award, the top prize in BIFF's Competition section, is now eligible for submission to the Best International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards. The U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is in charge of the Oscars, recognizes only six festivals that can submit films: BIFF, Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Sundance and Toronto.

BIFF는 7일 영화와 영상 콘텐츠의 미래를 논의하는 '뤼미에르 서밋'에도 참석한다. 한국과 프랑스 정상이 이끄는 이번 행사는 프랑스 남부 생폴드방스에서 30여 개국에서 초청된 150명의 주요 인사들이 한자리에 모인다.

BIFF on Sept. 7 will take part in the Lumiere Summit in southern France for talks on the future of film and video content. President Lee Jae Myung and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron will be among some 150 leading figures from about 30 countries at the event.

올해 영화제 주요 프로그램과 초청작도 이날 기자회견에서 공개됐다. The main programs and featured works of this year's BIFF were unveiled at the news conference.

공식 초청작은 59개국 246편, 월드 프리미어 영화만 95편에 달한다. 개막작은 김종관 감독의 ‘낮과 밤은 서로에게’가 선정됐다. 여름에서 가을 사이, 한 카페에서 네 쌍의 남녀가 나누는 유쾌하고 담백하며 사랑스러운 대화의 영화다.

The selection features 246 works from 59 countries, including 95 world premieres. The opening film is Kim Jong-kwan's "The Table: Day and Night," the story of a lighthearted, down-to-Earth and endearing conversation among four couples at a cafe set between summer and fall.

세계적 거장의 최신작을 선보이는 ‘아이콘 섹션’에서는 역대 최대 규모인 36편이 상영된다. 칸영화제 황금종려상을 받은 크리스티안 문쥬 감독의 '피오르', 칸영화제 여우주연상 수상작인 하마구치 류스케 감독의 '갑자기 병세가 악화되다' 등이 상영된다. 이창동 감독의 '가능한 사랑'과 홍상수 감독의 '눈 둘 데가 없네'도 관객과 만난다.

The Icon section, which features the latest works by globally acclaimed directors, will screen a record 36 films. They include "Fjord" by director Cristian Mungiu and "All of a Sudden," the top prize winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival by director Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

The domestic works "Possible Love" by director Lee Chang-dong and "Nowhere to Lay My Eyes" by director Hong Sang-soo will also be shown as part of this section.

애니메이션 영화의 약진도 올해 영화제 특징이다. 지난해 중국과 일본에서 흥행 1위 영화 작품이 애니메이션이었고, 넷플릭스 '케이팝 데몬 헌터스'가 세계적인 흥행을 거두는 등 영화계의 애니메이션 영향력이 커진 흐름을 반영했다.

This year's BIFF also reflects the global rise of animation, a genre whose films topped the box office in China and Japan last year and saw Netflix's supernova "KPop Demon Hunters" become a world phenomenon.

이에 BIFF는 한국에서 접하기 어려웠던 일본 애니메이션 장·단편 13편을 중심으로 소개하는 ‘일본 애니메이션 특별전: 광기의 걸작, 전율의 기대작 12+1’을 마련했다.

Accordingly, the festival's program "Japanese Animation Special: Masterpieces of Madness, Exhilarating Prospects 12+1" will screen 13 animated features and shorts from Japan not readily accessible in Korea.

올해로 두 번째를 맞은 경쟁 부문에서는 14편의 주목할 만한 작품이 최고상인 '부산 어워드 대상'을 놓고 경쟁을 펼친다.

Marking its second year, the Competition section will have 14 films vie for the Busan Award, BIFF's top prize.

세계적인 감독과 배우들의 부산행도 이어진다. 아시아 배우 최초로 아카데미 여우주연상을 수상한 말레이시아 출신 양자경이 ‘올해의 아시아영화인상’ 수상을 위해 부산을 찾는다.

Befitting its newly acquired A-list status, the festival will also attract top directors and actors from across the globe. Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian to win the Oscar for Best Actress, will attend to accept BIFF's Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award.

프랑스의 전설적인 배우 이자벨 위페르, 인도네시아의 국민 배우 크리스틴 하킴도 영화제에 참석한다. 한국 관객에게도 친숙한 이란의 거장 감독 마지드 마지디는 경쟁 부문 초청작 ‘빵과 책’을 통해 처음으로 한국을 방문한다.

Celebrated French actor Isabelle Huppert and Indonesian counterpart Christine Hakim will also be there, while Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi, a familiar name to Korean audiences, will make his first visit to the nation with his Competition entry "Midday Meal."

BIFF는 다음달 6일부터 15일까지 부산 영화의전당 등 8개 극장 31개 스크린에서 열린다. BIFF will run from Oct. 6-15 at Busan Cinema Center and seven other theaters spanning 31 screens.

한국과 프랑스가 7일(현지 시간) 공동 의장국을 맡은 국제 영화·영상 정상회의 '뤼미에르 서밋'을 계기로 향후 5년간 각각 5억 유로(8000억 원)를 자국의 영화·영상산업에 투자하기로 했다.

Korea and France at the Lumiere Summit, a global event on the film and video industry in southern France that both co-chaired, on Sept. 7 announced investment of EUR 500 million (KRW 800 billion) each in both sectors in their respective countries over the next five years.

‘뤼미에르 서밋’은 영화와 영상의 미래를 논의하기 위해 최초로 개최된 영화·영상 정상회의다. 세계 각국 문화 장관과 국제기구 인사를 비롯해 영화·영상 기업 및 단체 대표, 감독·배우 등 58개국 274명이 참석했다.

The inaugural summit discussed the future of the film and visual industries, attracting 274 people from 58 countries including culture ministers, international organizations representatives, executives from film and visual companies and organizations, directors and actors.

이재명 대통령은 개막연설에서 영화·영상 산업의 중요성을 강조했다. 이어 극장 위기 극복, 인간 창의성과 인공지능(AI)의 조화로운 공존, 독립영화 지원을 바탕으로 한 문화 다양성 수호, 로컬과 글로벌의 상생 등 급변하는 산업 환경에 대응할 네 가지 핵심 의제를 제시했다.

In his opening speech, President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the importance of the two sectors. He presented four key priorities to respond to the rapidly changing industrial landscape: overcoming the crisis facing movie theaters; achieving harmonious coexistence between human creativity and artificial intelligence; protecting cultural diversity through support for indie films; and promoting mutual growth between local and global industries.

이 대통령과 에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령은 공동 의장으로 개막식에서 향후 5년(2027~2031년) 동안 각각 5억 유로를 영상산업에 투자하는 것을 골자로 하는 ‘글로벌 영화영상산업 투자협력 이니셔티브’(뤼미에르 파트너십) 출범을 선언했다.

At the opening ceremony, President Lee and French President Emmanuel Macron, both co-chairs of the summit, announced the launch of a cooperative initiative in the global film and video industries dubbed the "Lumiere Partnership." Both sides will each invest EUR 500 million in the two sectors from 2027-31.

한국과 프랑스는 독립 펀드를 활용해 자국 영상산업 기업을 우선 지원하고 향후 공동제작을 추진하는 등 단계적이고 개방적으로 협력해나갈 예정이다.

Seoul and Paris will pursue phased and open cooperation, prioritizing support for their domestic film and visual sectors through independent funding and later promoting joint productions.

President Macron said the two sides hoped this summit to turn into a milestone for a new form of cooperation -- "multilateralism in action" -- that unites countries, creators, producers, broadcasters, platforms, cinemas, the video game and technology industries, and international organizations.

한편 이 대통령은 이번 서밋에 초청된 한국 창작자들과 자리를 함께하며 창작 현장의 목소리를 경청했다.

President Lee also met Korean creators invited to the summit and listened to their perspectives on the creative industry.

이어 찰스 리프킨 미국영화협회 회장을 비롯해 넷플릭스, 디즈니, 소니, NBC유니버설 등 미국 메이저 미디어 기업 대표단과 CJ그룹 이미경 부회장을 접견하고 K-콘텐츠 산업의 미래와 한·미 협력 방안을 논의했다.

He also attended a meeting with a delegation of executives from major U.S. media companies including Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, and those from Netflix, Disney, Sony and NBC Universal as well as CJ Group Vice Chairwoman Miky Lee to discuss the future of the Korean content industry and reinforcement of bilateral cooperation with the U.S.

삼성과 SK 하이닉스, 셀트리온 등 국내 기업이 충청권 내 첨단산업 육성을 위해 총 392조 원을 쏟아붓는다. 정부도 ‘충청권 차세대 첨단산업 육성전략’을 가동해 이들 기업의 대규모 투자 계획을 전폭 지원할 방침이다.

Three domestic business giants will invest a combined KRW 392 trillion to develop cutting-edge industries in the Chungcheong region, which spans Daejeon, Sejong, and the provinces of Chungcheongbuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do.

A government strategy also seek to fully support such investment plans of these companies.

2일 산업통상자원부(산업부)가 충남 아산시에서 ‘충청권 첨단산업 발전비전 국민보고회’를 열어 이 같은 대형 투자 청사진을 공개했다.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on July 2 released a blueprint at a public briefing for the Lee administration's vision for cutting-edge industrial development in the region in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do.

보고회에는 삼성, SK 하이닉스, 셀트리온 등 국내 기업이 참가해 충청권 첨단투자 계획을 발표했다. Samsung Group, SK Hynix and Celltrion attended the briefing and announced their planned investments.

먼저 삼성은 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 와 차세대 디스플레이 라인, 고대역폭 메모리(HBM) 팹·패키징, 인공지능(AI) 서버용 고성능 패키지 기판, 최첨단 배터리 신공법 표준 생산라인 구축 등에 약 140조원을 투입한다.

First, Samsung will invest about KRW 140 trillion in OLED and next-generation display lines, high bandwidth memory (HBM) fabs and packaging, high-performance package boards for artificial intelligence (AI) servers, and construction of standard production lines for new cutting-edge battery manufacturing processes.

SK하이닉스는 낸드 및 첨단 패키징 팹 등에 약 100조원, 셀트리온은 바이오 의약품 생산시설 등에 약 2조원을 각각 투자하겠다고 밝혔다.

SK Hynix will spend some KRW 100 trillion on NAND and advanced packaging fabs, while Celltrion will allocate about KRW 2 trillion for biopharmaceutical production facilities.

여기에 AI 데이터센터 등을 짓는 기업들의 추가 투자가 맞물리면서 충청권 총투자 규모는 392조 원으로 불어났다.

Combined with investments by other companies building AI data centers and other facilities, investment in the region will reach a combined KRW 392 trillion.

정부도 강력한 맞춤형 지원사격에 나선다. 투자 인센티브와 복합규제를 완화하는 ‘메가특구’를 지정해 기업의 지방투자를 유도할 계획이다. 디스플레이, 반도체, 이차전지·부품, 바이오 등 첨단 분야 투자 기업을 중심으로 촘촘한 지역산업 생태계를 짜고 산학연 혁신을 촉진한다는 구상이다.

Strong and customized support pledged by the government includes the designation of "mega special zones" with investment incentives and eased regulations to stimulate corporate investment in provincial areas.

The ultimate objective is to build an ecosystem of dense regional industries focused on companies investing in cutting-edge sectors such as displays, semiconductors, secondary batteries and components, and biotechnology while promoting innovation through cooperation among industry, academia and research institutes.

특히 입지 확보부터 인허가, 전력, 용수, 인력, 금융 등 기업들이 현장에서 겪는 애로사항을 빠르게 해결하기 위해 ‘충청권 투자 종합지원계획’을 마련한다.

An investment support plan will be devised to swiftly resolve the challenges companies face, ranging from securing sites and permits to issues related to power, water, labor and finance.

김정관 산업부 장관은 “중앙정부도 지방정부와 합심해 오늘 발표한 투자 계획이 ‘대체불가 대한민국’의 결실로 이어지도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Resources Kim Jung-Kwan said, "The central government will join forces with local governments to do its best to ensure that the investment plan announced today leads to an 'irreplaceable Republic of Korea.'"

덴마크 감독이 그려낸 탈북민의 삶··· '하나 코리아' 개봉 - Danish-directed 'Hana Korea' chronicles struggle of NK defector

오는 8일 개봉하는 탈북 여성의 한국 정착기를 그린 영화 '하나 코리아'는 제작진 구성부터 눈길을 끈다. "Hana Korea," a movie about a North Korean female defector who struggles to adapt to life in South Korea, is set for domestic release on July 8.

분단국가라는 한국 현실을 소재로 삼았지만, 덴마크 출신 프레드릭 쇨베르 감독이 메가폰을 잡았다. 여기에 애플TV+ 드라마 ‘파친코’의 김민하, 넷플릭스 시리즈 ‘오징어게임 1’의 김주령, 영화 ‘옥자’로 주목받은 안서현이 출연한다. 봉준호 감독의 통역사로 알려진 최성재 작가도 공동 각본에 참여해 한·덴마크 합작 영화를 탄생시켰다.

A stark look at the Korean Peninsula's division, the film was directed by Frederik Solberg of Denmark and stars actors Kim Minha ("Pachinko"), Kim Jooryoung (season one of "Squid Game") and Ahn Seohyun ("Okja"). Sharon Sung-jae Choi, who earned fame as "Parasite" director Bong Joon-ho's interpreter, co-wrote the screenplay.

‘하나 코리아’는 탈북이라는 극적인 과정보다 그 이후 한국 사회에서의 삶을 그린다. 쇨베르 감독은 5년간 30여 명의 탈북민과 나눈 심층 인터뷰 내용을 바탕으로 이야기를 구축했다.

"Hana Korea" focuses less on the protagonist's defection and more on her life in South Korea. Solberg said he wrote the plot based on in-depth interviews with about 30 North Korean defectors over five years.

지난달 26일 서울 용산구 CGV용산아이파크몰에서 열린 ‘하나 코리아’ 기자간담회에서 그는 “2010년 처음 한국을 방문했을 때 우연히 만난 두 한국인에게 ‘우리의 소원은 통일’이라는 이야기를 들었다”며 제작 계기를 되짚었다.

그는 “역사적 사실로만 접하던 분단이 개인의 삶에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 궁금해졌다. 이후 하나원을 취재하며 2019년 실화의 모티브가 된 탈북민을 만났고, 그의 용기와 삶에 큰 감동을 받아 영화를 만들기로 결심했다”고 말했다.

At the news conference for the film at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul, the director discussed his inspiration for the film. He said that soon after arriving in South Korea for the first time in 2010, he went to a restaurant and started talking to two men, one of whom said his wish was "hana (one) Korea."

He said he grew curious about Korean division, which he knew only as a historical fact, and how it impacts individual lives. While exploring Hanawon, a training facility in a southern Seoul suburb that prepares defectors for adaptation to life in South Korea, he met a defector in 2019 whose courage and life moved him to make a movie.

최 작가는 “탈북민의 이야기는 자칫 극적인 사건으로만 소비되기 쉽다” 면서 “분열이 깊어지는 시대인 만큼 역경을 극복하며 살아가는 한 젊은 여성의 여정을 통해 더 많은 관객이 정서적 공감대를 이룰 이야기가 필요했다”라고 거들었다.

그는 “감독님이 외국인이다 보니 어떤 장면은 영어로, 또 어떤 장면은 한국어로 시나리오를 쓰기도 했다" 며 "언어를 오가며 작업했던 점도 굉장히 흥미로운 경험이었다”고 덧댔다.

"It's easy for the stories of North Korean defectors to be consumed as dramatic events," Choi said. "In an era of deepening division, we needed a story to allow viewers to form an emotional connection with the journey of a young woman overcoming adversity."

"As we have a foreign director, we wrote the script in English for certain scenes and Korean for others," she added. "Working while switching languages was a very interesting experience."

영화는 주인공 '혜선'이 겪는 사소한 경험부터 일상적인 소외감까지, 한국 사회에서 마주하는 크고 작은 장면들을 담담하게 그리며 새로운 삶의 무게를 전달한다.

The film shows the ups and downs of the protagonist Hye-seon's life in South Korean society, from small experiences to her daily sense of isolation.

‘혜선’ 역을 맡은 김민하는 “실존 인물을 모티브로 한 작품이기에 더욱 조심스럽고 소중하게 다뤄야 하는 이야기라고 생각했다. ‘혜선’이 한국에 도착한 이후 어떤 과정을 거쳐 지금에 이르렀는지, 그 변화의 단계를 세세하게 나눠 연기를 준비했다”라고 밝혔다.

"Because the work is based on a real person, I thought we needed to handle it more carefully and respectfully," said Kim Minha, who played Hye-seon. "I prepared for the role by meticulously breaking down the stages of change Hye-seon goes through, from her arrival in (South) Korea until now."

해외 관객이 '하나 코리아'를 어떻게 바라봐 주길 바라는지 묻자 쇨베르 감독은 “김민하, 김주령, 안서현 세 배우가 작품에 놀라운 헌신을 보여줬다” 며 “8월 덴마크를 시작으로 북미 등 세계 각국에서 순차적으로 개봉을 앞두고 있어, 다양한 문화권의 관객이 ‘혜선’의 여정을 어떻게 받아들일지 벌써부터 무척 기대된다”며 설렘을 표했다.

쇨베르 감독은 “새로운 삶을 시작하며 용기와 끈기를 잃지 않는 혜선의 이야기는 현대인 모두의 삶과 닿아있다” 면서 “우리가 누리는 자유의 가치와 그 대가를 생각해 보는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 했다.

Solberg hailed the film's three main actors for their dedication. With the film to be released worldwide starting in Denmark next month, he added, "We've done our best to make a film that will resonate hopefully both with Korean and international audiences."

The story of Hye-seon, who begins a new life with courage and perseverance, resonates with life in modern society, he said, adding his hope that viewers reflect on the value of freedom and its price.

넷플릭스 시리즈 ‘참교육’이 2주 연속 글로벌 톱10 비영어 쇼 1위 자리를 지켜냈다. The K-drama "Teach You a Lesson" has just spent its second straight week atop the global Netflix chart for series not in English.

17일 넷플릭스 공식 사이트 ‘투둠’에 따르면 지난주(6월 8 ~14일) ‘참교육’이 2110만 시청 수, 2억2580만 시청 시간을 기록하며 넷플릭스 글로벌 TOP10 비영어 쇼 부문 1위에 올랐다.

Netflix Tudum, an official companion site of the global streaming service, on June 17 said the program for the week of June 8-14 had 21.1 million viewers and 225.8 million viewing hours.

지난 5일 공개 이후 첫 주부터 해당 부문 정상을 차지한 ‘참교육’은 글로벌 흥행 돌풍을 이어가며 2주 연속 정상 자리를 지키는 데 성공했다.

Since its release on June 5, the series topped the chart in its first week and has continued its strong global performance.

국가별로는 한국을 포함해 일본, 싱가포르 등 46개국에서 1위를 기록했다. 미국, 영국, 인도, 프랑스, 독일, 호주, 멕시코, 브라질 등 총 91개 국가에서는 상위 10권에 올랐다.

"Teach You a Lesson" was No. 1 on the Netflix lists of 46 countries including Korea, Japan and Singapore and ranked among the top 10 of 91 others like the U.S., U.K., India, France, Germany, Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

동명 웹툰을 원작으로 한 ‘참교육’은 선 넘는 학생, 교사, 학부모로 무너진 교권을 회복하기 위해 신설된 가상의 기관 ‘교권보호국’의 활약을 그린 넷플릭스 시리즈다. 작품에는 배우 김무열, 이성민, 진기주, 표지훈 등이 출연한다.

Based on the eponymous webtoon, the K-drama follows the fictional Educational Rights Protection Bureau that seeks to restore teacher authority at schools disrupted by unruly students and toxic parents. The cast includes Kim Mu-yeol, Lee Sung-min, Jin Ki-joo and P.O (Pyo Ji-hoon).

칸 심사위원장 박찬욱, 프랑스 최고 문화예술 공로 훈장···한국인 네 번째 - Director Park Chan-wook is 4th Korean to win France's top culture award

제79회 칸 영화제 심사위원장인 박찬욱 감독이 프랑스 정부가 수여하는 최고 권위의 문화예술공로훈장 (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres)을 받았다. Director Park Chan-wook, jury president at this year's Cannes Film Festival, has won the Order of Arts and Letters, the French government's highest cultural honor.

한국의 영화감독으로서 세계 영화사에 남긴 업적과 프랑스 문화예술계와 이어온 긴밀한 협력 관계를 대외적으로 인정받았다는 평가다.

This reflects global recognition of his achievements in global cinema as a film director and his close ties with French culture and arts.

연합뉴스, 로이터 통신 등 국내외 매체에 따르면 17일(현지 시간) 카트린 페가르 프랑스 문화 장관은 칸에서 박 감독에게 '코망되르'(Commandeur) 훈장을 수여했다.

Domestic and foreign media such as Yonhap News and Reuters said French Minister of Culture Catherine Pegard gave Park the Commander medal at the festival.

문화예술공로훈장은 프랑스 문화부가 1957년 제정한 훈장으로 프랑스를 포함한 세계 문화·예술 발전에 기여한 인물에게 수여된다. 등급은 코망되르, 오피시에(Officier), 슈발리에(Chevalier) 등 세 단계로 나뉘며 코망되르는 최고 등급이다.

Launched in 1957 by the French Ministry of Culture, the Order of Arts and Letters goes to individuals who have contributed to the development of culture and arts in France and around the world. It has three categories in order of prestige: Commander, Officer and Knight.

한국인이 이 훈장을 받은 건 지난 2002년 김정옥 당시 한국문화예술진흥원장과 2011년 지휘자 정명훈, 지난해 소프라노 조수미 씨에 이어 박 감독이 네 번째다.

Park is the fourth Korean to receive this award, following Kim Jeong-ok in 2002, conductor Chung Myung-whun in 2011 and soprano Sumi Jo last year.

박 감독은 훈장 수훈 후 자신의 작품 세계에 프랑스 영화와 철학이 막대한 영향을 미쳤음을 밝히며 "프랑스에서 받은 모든 영향이 내게 종합되는 그런 기분을 받았다"고 소감을 밝혔다.

After receiving the medal, Park said his work was heavily influenced by French cinema and philosophy, adding, "I felt as if all the influences I received in France came together within me."

이어 박 감독은 "내가 프랑스로부터 많은 영향을 받은 것만큼, 또 지금도 받는 것만큼 나 자신이 프랑스의 젊은 감독들에게 어떤 영향을 조금이라도 주고 있는 것 같아서 너무나 감동적이고 뿌듯하다"고 감격해했다.

"Just as I've been influenced by France and continue to be, I'm incredibly moved and proud to think I, in turn, might be having a small influence on young French directors."

그는 그동안 칸과 각별한 인연을 이어왔다. 2004년 영화 '올드보이'로 심사위원대상을 수상하며 세계적인 주목을 받았다. 2009년 '박쥐'로 심사위원상, 2022년 '헤어질 결심'으로 감독상을 각각 거머쥐었다. 2017년에는 경쟁 부문 심사위원으로 참여하며 칸과의 인연을 이어간 바 있다.

Park has a long-standing and storied connection with the festival. He won the Grand Prix (Jury Prize) for Oldboy in 2004 and again for Thirst in 2009, as well as Best Director for Decision to Leave in 2022.

In 2017, he was a jury member in the Competition section.

영화 '왕과 사는 남자' 1100만 관객 돌파 - Period drama megahit 'King's Warden' breaks 11M in ticket sales

단종을 다룬 영화 '왕과 사는 남자'가 '천만 영화'에 오른 지 사흘 만에 1100만 관객을 돌파했다. "The King's Warden," a historical period epic on the life of the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), has surpassed 11 million in ticket sales three days after reaching the 10 million mark.

개봉 31일째인 6일 역대 국내 개봉작 가운데 34번째 천만 영화에 이름을 올린 데 이어 주말에도 관객을 끌어모으며 흥행세를 이어갔다.

Reaching 10 million in sales on March 6 on the 31st day after its release, the blockbuster is the country's 34th movie to break 10 million viewers and continued to draw moviegoers over the weekend.

9일 영화관입장권 통합전산망에 따르면 '왕과 사는 남자'는 지난 주말(6~8일) 172만 5000여 명(매출액 점유율 80.3%)의 관객을 극장으로 불러 모았다.

The Korean Box Office Information System of the Korean Film Council on March 9 said "The King's Warden" drew about 1,725,000 viewers from March 6-8, accounting for 80.3% of box office revenue.

누적 관객 수는 1150만 3000여 명으로 '범죄도시4'(2024년·1150만 2000명), '해운대'(2009년·1145만 명), '어벤져스: 인피니티 워'(2018년·1121만 명)의 기록을 넘어섰다.

The cumulative number of viewers reached 11,503,000, breaking the records set by ‘"The Roundup: Punishment" (2024) with 11,502,000, "Tidal Wave" (2009) 11,450,000 and "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) 11,210,000.

장항준 감독의 ‘왕과 사는 남자’는 강원도 영월로 유배된 단종 이홍위(박지훈)가 마을 촌장 엄흥도(유해진)를 비롯한 마을 사람들과 교감하며 인생의 마지막 시기를 보내는 이야기를 그린 작품이다.

Directed by Jang Hang-jun, "The King's Warden" depicts the life of King Danjong (played by actor Park Jihoon) after his exile to Yeongwol-gun County, Gangwon-do Province. There, he spends the final years of his life interacting with the villagers including its chief Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hae-jin).

부산국제영화제 2일 개막···63개국 224편 상영 - Busan Int'l Film Festival to screen 224 works from 43 nations

아시아 최대 영화 축제인 ‘제29회 부산국제영화제(BIFF)’가 2일 개막식을 시작으로 11일까지 열흘간 열린다. The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), Asia's largest cinematic event, kicks off its 11-day run on Oct. 2 with the opening ceremony.

개막식은 2일 오후 6시 부산 해운대 영화의 전당 야외극장에서 열린다. 배우 박보영과 안재홍이 사회자로 나서며 네이버TV(tv.naver.com/biff23)에서 생중계한다.

To start at 6 p.m. at the outdoor screen of Busan Cinema Theater in Busan's Haeundae-gu District, the event will be hosted by actors Park Boyoung and Ahn Jaehong. Livestreaming of the ceremony on Naver TV (tv.naver.com/biff23) starts at 6 p.m.

이번 BIFF는 총 63개국 224편의 영화를 CGV센텀시티, 롯데시네마 센텀시티, 영화진흥위원회 표준시사실, 메가박스 부산극장 등 총 5개 극장, 26개 상영관에서 상영한다.

This year's gala features 224 films from 63 countries to be shown at 26 screens of five theaters: CGV Centum City, Lotte Cinema Centum City, Megabox Busan Theater and the theater of the Korean Film Council.

개막작은 박찬욱 감독이 제작과 각본에 참여한 넷플릭스 사극 영화 ‘전,란’이다. BIFF가 인터넷 동영상 서비스(OTT) 영화를 개막작으로 선정한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

The opening movie is the Netflix historical epic "Uprising" by director Kim Sang-man and producer Park Chan-wook, who also helped write the screenplay. The film is the first from an over-the-top platform to open BIFF.

영화 상영 외에도 특별 프로그램을 운영한다. 올해 아시아영화인상 수상자이자 ‘뱀의 길(2024)’, ‘클라우드’ 두 편의 영화로 BIFF를 찾는 구로사와 기요시 감독과 특별 기획 프로그램 ‘명랑한 멜랑콜리의 시네아스트’ 주인공 미겔 고메스 감독, 홍콩 뉴웨이브의 아이콘 허안화 감독 등 영화 거장들의 이야기를 들을 수 있는 마스터 클래스를 준비했다.

The guests this year are Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who is this year's BIFF's Asian Filmmaker of the Year and will screen works "Serpent's Path" and "Cloud," both of which came out this year; Miguel Gomes, who directed "Joyful Melancholy"; and Ann Hui, an icon among the new wave of Hong Kong directors.

BIFF 초청 작품 감독과 배우들이 자유롭게 대화를 나누는 ‘오픈 토크’와 ‘야외무대인사’ 등 다양한 부대 행사도 마련했다. Other sideline events include "open talks" with directors and cast members of invited films and "outdoor stage greetings."

개막식에선 아시아 영화산업과 한국 영화의 세계 홍보에 기여한 인물에게 수여하는 ‘올해의 아시아영화인상’과 ‘한국영화공로상’ 수상자를 발표한다. 특히 이번 BIFF는 다큐멘터리 장르의 대중성을 확보하기 위해 ‘다큐멘터리 관객상’을 신설했다.

The opening ceremony will announce the winners of Asian Filmmaker of the Year and the Korean Cinema Awards for those contributing to Asian cinema and the global spread of Korean movies. This year's BIFF will also launch the Documentary Audience Award to promote the documentary genre.

전 세계 영화∙영상 콘텐츠를 비롯해 지식 재산권까지 거래할 수 있는 종합 콘텐츠 시장인 제19회 아시아콘텐츠&필름마켓은 BIFF 기간 중 5일부터 8일까지 부산 벡스코 제2전시장에서 열린다.

Also happening over the festival period is the 19th annual Asian Contents & Film Market, a venue for trading global cinematic and video content and intellectual property rights, from Oct. 5-8 at Exhibition Hall 2 of the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center, aka BEXCO.

BIFF는 11일 폐막작 '영혼의 여행'으로 막을 내린다. BIFF will conclude on Oct. 11 with the closing work "Spirit World."

김민희, 로카르노영화제 최우수연기상 - Actor Kim Min-hee wins Best Performance Award at Swiss festival

배우 김민희가 제77회 로카르노 국제영화제에서 홍상수 감독의 영화 ‘수유천’으로 최우수연기상을 받았다. Actor Kim Min-hee has won the Best Performance Award at this year's Locarno International Film Festival of Switzerland for her role in "By the Stream" by director Hong Sang-soo.

17일(현지 시각) 스위스 로카르노에서 열린 시상식에서 영화 ‘수유천’에 출연한 김민희가 국제 경쟁부문 최우수연기상 수상자 중 한 명으로 호명됐다.

Kim on Aug. 17 was announced as one of the two winners of the honor in the festival's International Competition section at the awards ceremony in Locarno, Switzerland.

‘수유천’은 홍 감독의 32번째 연출작으로, 여자대학교 강사가 외삼촌에게 촌극 연출을 부탁하며 벌어지는 이야기를 그렸다. As Hong's 32nd film, "By the Stream" is what happens to a lecturer at a women's university when she asks her maternal uncle to direct a skit.

‘수유천’은 ‘우리 선희’(2013), ‘지금은 맞고 그때는 틀리다’(2015), ‘강변호텔’(2018)에 이어 네 번째 로카르노영화제에 공식 초청된 홍 감독의 작품이다. The movie was also the director's fourth to receive an official invitation to the festival, following "Our Sunhi" (2013), "Right Now, Wrong Then" (2015) and "Hotel by the River" (2018).

김민희는 리투아니아와 라트비아가 공동제작한 영화 속 4명의 배우와 함께 최우수연기상 수상자로 선정됐다. The other Best Performance Award went to four actors in the Lithuanian-Latvian film "Drowning Dry."

시상대에 오른 김민희는 한국어로 “로카르노와 심사위원단에 진심으로 감사드린다. 길게 찍고 싶었는데 5일이 너무 짧았다” 며 “그 짧은 시간이 행복했고 너무 즐거웠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

"I sincerely thank Locarno and the jury. I wanted filming to last longer as five days was too short," Kim said in Korean while accepting her award. "That short period of time was so enjoyable and happy for me."

이어 "영화를 보고 따뜻한 말을 건네주신 관객들도 다 너무 고맙다" 면서 홍 감독에게도 “이렇게 아름다운 영화를 만들어주신 홍상수 감독님, 저는 당신의 영화를 너무 사랑한다”며 감사를 표했다.

"I'm so grateful to audiences who said nice comments after watching the film," she added. "To director Hong Sang-soo, who made such a lovely film, I adore all of your films."

한편 ‘수유천’은 로카르노 영화제에서 월드 프리미어로 공개한 후 올해 하반기 국내 개봉할 예정이다. After its global premiere at the festival, "By the Stream" will be released in Korea later this year.

지난 1946년 시작된 로카르노 국제영화제는 매년 8월에 열리는 세계 6대 영화제다. 예술적이고 실험적인 작가주의 영화들을 선보이는 것으로 알려졌다.

Launched in 1946, the festival is among the world's six best. Held every August in the Swiss city, it features artistic, experimental and auteuristic works.

숲속에서 즐기는 영화 한마당···제12회 무주산골영화제 - Provincial film festival in forest gives cinematic joy in nature

인구 2만 3천 명의 도시 무주. 녹음이 짙어지는 여름이 오면 고요한 산골 마을은 달뜬 열기에 휩싸인다. ‘한 번도 안 온 사람은 있어도 한 번만 온 사람은 없다’는 무주산골영화제가 열리기 때문이다. 올해도 영화를 사랑하는 수많은 이들이 산과 계곡의 도시 무주를 찾았다. 일상의 고단함은 잠시 잊고 자연 속에 파묻혀 영화를 한껏 만끽하기 위해서다.

Muju-gun County, Jeollabuk-do Province, has a population of 23,000. As the greenery there thickens in summer, this quiet mountain village area is a hotbed for visitors thanks to the annual Muju Film Festival. A saying goes that there are people who have never attended the event, but everyone who has attended has never gone just once. Many cinema aficionados this year visited this county of mountains and valleys as a temporary break from daily fatigue while watching films immersed in nature.

올해로 12회를 맞는 무주산골영화제에선 5일부터 9일까지 닷새간 국내외 최신 영화부터 다큐멘터리까지 21개국 영화 96편을 상영했다. 무주의 풍요로운 자연만큼이나 다채롭고 알찬 프로그램이다. 베를린영화제에서 호평을 받은 김혜영 감독의 ‘괜찮아 괜찮아 괜찮아!’(2023), 전주영화제 개막작인 미야케 쇼 감독의 ‘새벽의 모든’(2024), 칸 영화제 황금종려작 수상작인 쥐스틴 트리에 감독의 ‘추락의 해부’(2024) 등 전 세계 수작들이 관객들에게 감동과 즐거움을 선사했다.

Running from June 5-9, the festival's 12th edition screened recent 96 films and documentaries from 21 countries, ranging from recent works from both home and abroad to documentaries. The content was as diverse and meaningful as the region's abundant nature. Among the works were "It's Okay!" (2023) by director Kim Hye-young, a film that earned raves at the Berlin International Film Festival; "All the Long Nights" (2024) by Japanese director Sho Miyake that opened this year's Jeonju International Film Festival in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province; and French director Justine Triet's "Anatomy of a Fall" (2024), winner of the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Masterpieces from around the world like these moved and amused the audience.

코리아넷 취재진도 행사 사흘째인 7일 축제장을 방문했다. 차에서 내리자마자 숲을 머금은 싱그러운 공기가 폐부를 가득 채웠다. 故 정기용 건축가가 설계한 무주등나무운동장에 들어섰다. 야트막한 산 아래로 탁 트인 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 관객들은 너른 잔디밭에 형형색색의 돗자리를 깔고 축제를 만끽할 준비에 한창이었다. 운동장 주변을 한가로이 걷는데 무대 위로 익숙한 얼굴이 눈에 들어왔다. 올해 무주산골영화제 넥스트 액터로 선정된 배우 고민시다. 넷플릭스 시리즈 ‘좋아하면 울리는’, ‘스위트홈’의 주역 고민시는 “무주산골영화제에서 영화를 사랑하는 사람들을 많이 만났다” 면서 “처음 배우로 데뷔했을 때가 떠올라 감회가 새로웠다”며 환하게 웃었다.

Korea.net on June 7 covered the event on its third day. As soon as its writer stepped out of the car, the fresh air of the forest filled her lungs. She entered Muju Wisteria Tree Field, designed by the late architect Jung Ki-yong. Below the low mountain lay a wide open landscape. Visitors laid out picnic mats on the grass in a kaleidscope of colors to prepare for the festival. As the writer leisurely strolled around the field, she saw on stage a familiar face. Actor Ko Minsi, who played major roles in the Netflix series "Love Alarm" and "Sweet Home," was named "Next Actor" at the festival. "I met many cinema aficionados at the Muju Film Festival," she said with a smile. "It refreshingly brought back memories from the time of my acting debut."

무주예체문화관으로 발걸음을 옮겼다. 빈부격차와 출산 문제를 다룬 장민준 감독의 영화 ‘딜리버리’를 볼 요량으로. 영화 관람도 식후경. 허기를 달래기 위해 주변을 둘러보니 광장 한쪽에 간식 부스가 옹기종기 모여 있었다. 김치전, 주먹밥, 떡볶이를 비롯해 컵빙수, 커피, 수제차 등 각양각색의 음식을 보자 입안에 군침이 가득 고였다. 2천 원부터 1만 원까지 저렴한 가격대에 환경을 생각해 다회용기를 사용하는 점이 인상적이었다. 한쪽에 마련된 팬 상품(굿즈)점에 진열된 머그잔, 뱃지, 열쇠고리, 자석 등이 눈길을 끌었다. MZ세대(1981~2010년 생)를 겨냥한 물건들일 터.

An arts and culture center screened "Delivery" by director Jang Min-joon, a movie on the country's gap between the haves and have nots and low birth rate. Visitors before the film started could buy snacks at booths at a corner of the plaza, with scenes of mouthwatering kimchi jeon (traditional pancake), jumeokbap (rice balls), tteokbokki (spicy rice cake), cup bingsu (shaved ice dessert), coffee and craft tea.

The price range of the food was a reasonable KRW 10,000-KRW 20,000 and dishes were served in reusable plates or cups mindful of the environment. The merchandise store sold things like coffee mugs, badges, keychains and magnets, apparently targeting Gen MZ, or a demographic of millennials and Gen Z born between 1981 and 2010.

무주는 노령 인구가 60% 이상을 차지한다. 이런 작은 마을에서 영화제를 하게 된 이유가 궁금해졌다. “당시 예능 프로 중 '힐링캠프'가 화제였는데 캠핑 문화에 치유를 덧대는 식으로, 지친 일상을 무주에서 위로받고 쉴 수 있는 문화적 트렌드로 자리매김할 수 있겠다고 생각했다.” 1회 때부터 무주산골영화제를 기획해 온 조지훈 프로그래머가 한 언론과 인터뷰에서 한 말에 고개가 끄덕여진다. 거창한 타이틀도 없이 소박하게 시작한 영화제가 예상 외로 큰 인기를 얻으며 어느새 젊은이들 사이에서 핫한 영화제로 웅숭깊게 자리매김했다.

Slightly more than 60% of Muju-gun residents are senior citizens, so how did such a small town land a film festival? The event's programmer Jo Ji-hoon, who has planned the festival since its inception, had an answer in a media interview.

"At the time, 'Healing Camp' was quite popular among TV entertainment shows, and by adding healing to camping culture, we thought that the festival could emerge as a cultural trend for people to take comfort and rest to relieve their exhaustion from everyday life," he said. The festival was launched simply with no fancy title, but unexpectedly gained high popularity and went viral among youth as a hot cinematic event.

밤이 되자 등나무운동장은 10CM의 라이브 공연으로 후끈 달아올랐다. 초여름과 어울리는 달콤한 멜로디에 관객들은 한껏 고조된 모습이었다. 라이브의 열기가 가시고 어느새 장내가 조용해지더니 커다란 스크린 위로 프레드 C. 뉴메이어, 샘 테일러 감독의 흑백 무성영화 ‘걸 샤이’가 펼쳐졌다. 여자 앞에만 서면 말을 더듬는 남자로 분한 해럴드 로이드의 코미디 연기가 관객들의 웃음을 자아내며 숲 속의 밤을 물들였다. 목관악기 연주자 박기훈, 피아니스트 계수정, 재즈 드러머 조성준의 특별 라이브 연주는 영화에 생동감을 더했다. 여름밤 숲 내음 가득한 자연 속에서 풀벌레 소리를 들으며 영화를 감상할 수 있다니. 도심 영화제와는 차별화된 무주산골영화제에서만 누릴 수 있는 특별한 경험이다.

When night descended, the performance of solo indie artist 10CM at the field livened up the atmosphere. The sweet melody that went well with early summer seemed to resonate with the audience. After the exciting performance ended and the venue fell silent, "Girl Shy" (1924), a black-and-white film by directors Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, was projected on a large screen.

Actor Harold Lloyd's comic role of a man who always stutters when in front of a woman elicited laughter from the audience and raised the forest atmosphere at night. Performances by wind instrument player Park Gi-hoon, pianist Gye Soo-jung and jazz drummer Jo Sung-joon added vivacity to the film. The sound of grass bugs and the scent of nature in a summer forest provided an exclusive facet of the festival differentiating it from typical film festivals in a city.

올해 무주산골영화제는 3만 5000여 명의 관객을 끌어모으며 성황리에 마무리됐다. 축제의 활기와 자연의 여유로움이 공존하는 무주산골영화제. 무주는 다시 종전의 고요를 되찾았고 관객들은 일상으로 돌아갔지만 매년 여름이 오면 반딧불이의 고장 무주는 다시 영화를 사랑하는 사람들로 북적이며 반짝일 것이다.

Attracting 35,000 visitors this year, the event featured the coexistence of the richness of the films shown and relaxation from nature. Muju-gun has regained its tranquility and visitors have returned to daily life with the end of the festival, but this home of fireflies will again bustle with activity and shine in summer next year with cinema lovers.

시원한 한국형 액션 영화 ‘범죄도시4’ 귀환 - Hit 'Roundup' series to return to theaters with 4th installment

강렬하고 통쾌한 한국 액션 영화 시리즈가 돌아왔다. The latest installment of a compelling and exhilarating blockbuster series will soon hit theaters.

영화 ‘범죄도시4’의 언론배급시사회·기자간담회가 지난 15일 서울 강남구 코엑스 메가박스에서열렸다. 주연인 마동석과 허명행 감독을 비롯해 배우 김무열, 박지환, 이동휘가 자리해 영화 촬영 등을 둘러싼 이야기를 나눴다.

An advance media screening and news conference for "The Roundup: Punishment" on April 15 was held at the megaplex Megabox COEX in Seoul's Gangnam-gu District. Attending the event were actor Ma Dong-seok, who played the lead, director Heo Myung-haeng, and cast members Kim Mu-yeol, Park Ji-hwan and Lee Dong-hwi to discuss the movie.

형사 마석도가 맨 주먹으로 범죄에 맞서 시원한 액션을 펼치는 ‘범죄도시’는 지난 2017년 첫 작품이 스크린에 걸린 것을 시작으로 2022년과 2023년 각각 범죄도시2, 범죄도시3가 관객을 찾아갔다. 이번에 네 번째 작품까지, 그야말로 한국의 대표적인 시리즈 영화로 자리잡았다. 현재 여덟 번째 시리즈까지 제작이 예정됐다.

With its protagonist Det. Ma Seok-do fighting crime with his bare hands, the series debuted in 2017 with "Outlaws," followed by "The Roundup" (2022) and "The Roundup: No Way Out" (2023). "The Roundup: Punishment" is the fourth installment of the nation's leading film series, with production planned up to part eight.

앞선 시리즈에 비해 악당의 전투력이 높아진 점에 대해 허 감독은 “마석도와의 마지막 대결이 더욱 흥미롭도록 설계했다”고 전했다. ‘범죄도시’의 백미는 영화 후반부에 펼쳐지는 마석도와 악당의 대결이다.

On the enhanced combat skills of the villains compared to those in the first three films, the director said, "We designed the final clash between the villains and Ma Seok-do to be even more interesting." The highlight of each edition in the series is the showdown between Ma and the villains at the end.

악당 백창기를 연기한 김무열은 "되도록이면 (스턴트 대역 없이) 제가 액션 연기를 하려고 했다" 며 "전문적으로 보였으면 하는 생각에 잔동작을 줄이고, 몸을 사리지 않았다"고 말했다. 그러면서 “권선징악을 균형감 있게, 유쾌하고 통쾌하게 그려내는 영화” 라며 ‘범죄도시’가 보여주는 시원한 액션을 언급했다.

"I tried to do the action scenes (without a stuntman) if possible," said Kim, who played villain Baek Chang-gi. "I wanted to look professional, so I minimized small movements and didn't hesitate." On the action scenes, the actor said, "This movie portrays good triumphing over evil in a balanced, cheerful and gratifying manner."

주인공인 마석도 역의 배우 마동석은 “굉장히 많은 사람들의 깊은 고민과 다양한 작업을 거쳐 만들어지는 영화” 라면서도 “범죄도시 시리즈의 목적은 엔터테이닝(대중적 재미)“이라고 강조했다.

"The film was made through the deep thinking and diverse efforts of so many people," actor Ma said. "The purpose of the 'The Roundup' series is entertainment."

통쾌한 액션이 영화 전체를 관통하는 가운데 중간중간 치고 들어오는 ‘범죄도시’ 특유의 재치와 유머도 관객을 즐겁게 한다. With delightful and non-stop action, the film also features the franchise's distinct wit and humor from time to time to entertain viewers.

‘범죄도시4’는 개봉을 앞두고 한국 시리즈 영화 최초로 지난 2월 제74회 베를린국제영화제 베를리날레 스페셜 갈라 부문에 초청됐다. 영화의 오락성과 작품성을 인정받아서다. 미국와 호주 등 전 세계 164개국에 미리 판매 되는 등 해외 반응 역시 뜨겁다.

Ahead of its domestic release, "The Roundup: Punishment" was the first Korean series to be invited to the Berlin International Film Festival in February in the Special Gala category, thanks to recognition of its entertainment and cinematic value. Overseas demand for the movie has also been brisk, with pre-sales to 164 countries including the U.S. and Australia.

‘범죄도시4’는 괴력의 형사 마석도(마동석)가 대규모 온라인 불법 도박 조직을 소탕하는 이야기를 그렸다. 오는 24일 한국과 인도네시아를 시작으로 다음 달까지 호주, 대만, 영국, 태국 등에서 잇따라 개봉될 예정이다.

"The Roundup: Punishment" is about the strong-armed detective Ma going after an illegal online gambling syndicate. Slated for release on April 24 in Korea and Indonesia, it will premiere through next month in Australia, Taiwan, the U.K. and Thailand.

전주국제영화제 한국경쟁 본선 10편 발표 - Jeonju International Film Festival lists 10 entries for Korean Competition

제25회 전주국제영화제에 선보일 한국경쟁 부문 영화 10편이 발표됐다. This year's Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province, has announced the list of 10 films for its Korean Competition section.

전주국제영화제 조직위원회는 지난해 11월부터 올 1월까지 진행한 공모 결과 역대 최다 작품인 134편이 출품돼 이 가운데 10편의 작품을 한국경쟁 부문 영화로 선정했다고 지난 22일 밝혔다. JIFF's organizing committee on March 22 said it selected the 10 for the category from a record-high 134 entries received between November last year and January this year.

이번에 뽑힌 10편의 작품은 '나선의 연대기'(김이소), '담요를 입은 사람'(박정미), '미망'(김태양), '양양'(양주연), '어텀 노트'(김솔), '언니 유정'(정해일), '엄마의 왕국'(이상학), '은빛살구'(장만민), '통잠'(김솔회), '힘을 낼 시간'(남궁선)이다.

The finalists are "A Chronicle in Spirals" by director Kim Yiso, "Blanket Wearer (Park Jeongmi), "Mimang" (Kim Taeyang), "My Missing Aunt" (Yang Juyeon), "Autumn Note" (Kim Sol), "Sister Yujeong" (Chung Haeil), "Mother's Kingdom" (Lee Sanghak), "Silver Apricot" (Jang Man-min), "Deprivation" (Kim Solhae and Lee Dojin), and "Time to Be Strong" (Namkoong Sun).

선정작과 관련, 한국경쟁 부문 심사위원들은 "한국경쟁 부문에 선정된 10편의 영화는 그 어느 해보다 알차고 튼실하다"고 평가했다. The jury for the category said on its selection, "The 10 films selected for the Korean Competition are more solid and robust than in previous years."

이어 심사위원들은 "여성에 관한 서사는 올해도 강세를 보였다" 면서 " 감독의 성별이나 장르와 무관하게 한국경쟁작 대다수는 영화 중심에 여성이 존재했고 그들의 내면을 관통하는 경우도 많았다"고 출품 경향을 언급했다.

"Narratives about women were strong again this year," it added on the trend of the works. "Regardless of the director's gender or genre, the majority of Korean Competition entries had women at the center and often presented penetrating glimpses at their inner selves."

올해 한국경쟁 부문에선 전주국제영화제의 산업 프로그램인 전주프로젝트가 성과를 거두며 그 존재 의미를 증명했다. 지난해 전주프로젝트의 워크인프로그레스 작품인 '미망', '담요를 입은 사람', '양양' 등 세 작품이 이번 한국경쟁 부문에 뽑혔다. 특히 '미망'은 지난해 토론토국제영화제에서 상영되기도 했다.

In this year's Korean Competition, JIFF's industry venture Jeonju Project proved its worth with the inclusion of three films from last year's private showcase program Work in Progress: "Mimang," "Blanket Wearer," and "My Missing Aunt." All three were entered into the competition, with "Mimang" screened last year at the Toronto International Film Festival.

해당 작품들을 만나볼 수 있는 제25회 전주국제영화제는 오는 5월 1일부터 10일까지 전주 영화의 거리를 비롯해 전주시 일대에서 열린다. The 10 finalists will be screened at this year's JIFF, which is slated from May 1-10 at Jeonju Movie Street and other locations around the city.

영화 '파묘' 해외 133 개국 관객과 만난다 - Occult blockbuster 'Exhuma' set for release in 133 countries

영화 '파묘'가 해외 133개국 개봉과 함께 해외 영화제 초청까지 연이은 낭보를 전하고 있다. The supernatural horror blockbuster "Exhuma" will be released in 133 countries and has received invitations to leading film festivals abroad.

배급사 쇼박스는 오컬트 미스터리 영화 '파묘'가 지난달 몽골을 시작으로 인도네시아, 대만에서 각각 첫선을 보였다고 12일 밝혔다. 오는 14일엔 호주, 뉴질랜드, 싱가포르, 말레이시아, 브루나이 15일 북미, 영국, 아일랜드, 베트남, 20일 필리핀, 21일엔 태국까지 개봉을 확정했다. 홍콩과 마카오, 캄보디아 관객은 다음 달 영화를 만난다.

The movie's distributor Showbox on March 12 said the film made its international debut last month starting in Mongolia and later in Indonesia and Taiwan. Its release schedule is March 14 in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei; March 15 in North America, the U.K., Ireland and Vietnam; March 20 in the Philippines; and March 21 in Thailand. It will premiere next month in Hong Kong, Macao and Cambodia.

북미 배급사 웰고USA(Well Go USA)는 "'파묘'는 전혀 예상치 못한 반전을 주는 영화" 라며 "북미의 오컬트 팬조차 영화가 선사하는 반전에 매료될 것"이라고 전했다. Well Go USA, the film's distributor in North America, hailed the movie's unexpected twists and said it will captivate occult genre fans on the continent.

독일 배급사 스플렌디드(Splendid)는 "'올드보이' 스타 최민식을 필두로 훌륭한 배우진이 만들어 낸 한국의 초자연적인 오컬트 영화"라고 소개했다. Splendid, the film's distributor in Germany, called it a Korean supernatural occult film with an outstanding cast led by actor Choi Min-sik, star of "Oldboy" (2003).

장재현 감독의 '파묘'는 거액의 돈을 받고 수상한 묘를 이장한 풍수사, 장의사, 무속인에게 벌어지는 기이한 사건을 담았다. 최근 국내에서 누적 관객 수 800만 명을 돌파하며 흥행 가도를 달리고 있다.

Directed by Jang Jae-hyun, "Exhuma" is about uncanny events that occur after a geomancer, a mortician and a shaman relocate a strange grave for a large fee. The film in Korea has sold over eight million tickets and counting.

'파묘'는 지난달 15일부터 열흘간 독일 베를린에서 열린 제74회 베를린영화제 '포럼' 섹션에 초청돼 월드 프리미어로 공개되며 세계적인 관심을 입증했다.

Its invitation to the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival of Germany, which kicked off its 10-day run on Feb. 15, also grabbed global attention as its screening was its world premiere.

이와 관련, 쇼박스는 "베를린영화제 공식 상영과 수입사를 대상으로 한 마켓 상영 이후 '파묘'의 영화제 초청과 판권 구매 문의가 이어지고 있다" 면서 "인도네시아에서는 개봉 후 역대 한국 영화 흥행 1위에 등극하며 신드롬을 불러일으키고 있다"고 밝혔다.

"The film has kept receiving inquiries about invitations to film festivals and purchase of distribution rights after its official screening at the Berlin International Film Festival and market screening for importers," Showbox said. "It's now a sensation in Indonesia as the highest-grossing Korean film there since its release."

한편 '파묘'는 오는 4월 24일부터 5월 2일까지 열리는 제26회 우디네극동영화제 경쟁 부문에 공식 초청됐다. This year's Udine Far East Film Festival of Italy, which runs from April 24 to May 2, has also officially invited "Exhuma" to its competition section.

제22회 피렌체 한국 영화제 21일 개막 - Florence Korean Film Fest in Italy to begin on March 21

제22회 피렌체 한국 영화제가 오는 3월 21일 막을 올린다. The 22nd Florence Korea Film Fest in Italy will kick off on March 21.

피렌체 한국 영화제는 지난 2002년 시작돼 20년 넘게 이탈리아에 한국 영화를 알려왔다. Since its launch in 2002, the festival has promoted Korean cinema in Italy for over 20 years.

올해 영화제에서는 30편의 장편 영화와 56편의 단편 영화가 이탈리아 관객과 만난다. This year's edition will screen 30 feature-length and 56 short films.

개막작은 엄태화 감독의 '콘크리트 유토피아' 다. 작품은 대지진으로 폐허가 된 서울에서 유일하게 남은 황궁 아파트로 생존자들이 모여들면서 벌어지는 이야기를 다뤘다. 이병헌, 박서준, 박보영 등이 출연했다.

The opening film is "Concrete Utopia" by director Um Tae-hwa, a post-apocalyptic thriller about survivors of a massive earthquake in Seoul who gather at Hwanggung (Imperial Palace) Apartment, the only building left standing in the capital. The cast includes Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young.

개막작의 주연 배우에게는 회고전이 헌정된다. '콘크리트 유토피아'의 주연 배우인 이병헌의 작품 6편이 영화제 기간에 상영된다. 이병헌은 마스터클래스 주인공으로 초청돼 관객과 대화의 시간을 가질 예정이다.

A retrospective of the works of the movie's lead actor Lee will also be held. Six of his films will be shown, and he will lead an invitational master class and hold a Q&A with the audience.

폐막작은 유재선 감독의 장편 데뷔작 '잠'이 선정됐다. 이 작품은 지난해 칸영화제 비평가 주간에 초청돼 화제를 모은 바 있다. "Sleep," the debut work by director Jason Yu that was screened last year in the Critics' Week section of the Cannes Film Festival, will be the closing film.

배우 송강호와 김지운 감독도 피렌체를 방문한다. 영화 '거미집'의 주연배우와 감독 자격으로 영화제를 찾아 마스터클래스를 연다. For the upcoming movie "Cobweb," lead actor Song Kang-ho and director Kim Jee-woon will also hold a master class at the festival.

올해는 한국 영화의 르네상스였던 1960년대를 대표하는 고전영화 5편이 한국영상자료원의 지원으로 이탈리아 관객에게 최초로 선보인다. 유현목 감독의 '오발탄'(1961), 김수용 감독의 '안개'(1967), 김기덕 감독의 '남과 북'(1964), 이만희 감독의 '마의 계단'(1964), 신상옥 감독의 '사랑방 손님과 어머니'(1961)를 상영한다.

Five domestic film classics from the 1960s, a decade dubbed the "Renaissance of Korean cinema," will make their debuts in Italy with support from the Korean Film Archive: "Aimless Bullet" (1961) by director Yu Hyun-mok; "Mist" (1967) by Kim Soo-yong; "The North and South" (1964) by Kim Kee-duk; "The Devil's Stairway" (1964) by Lee Man-hee; and "Mother and a Guest" (1961) by Shin Sang-ok.

영화제 마지막 날에는 정재일 피아니스트와 피렌체 오케스트라가 협연을 펼치며 한국 영화 향연의 피날레를 장식한다. Pianist Jung Jae-il and the Florentine Chamber Orchestra will hold a joint concert on the last day as the festival's finale.

제22회 피렌체 한국 영화제는 오는 3월 30일까지 이탈리아 피렌체 라 꼼빠니아 극장에서 열린다. This year's Florence Korea Film Fest will run through March 30 at Cinema the Company (Cinema la Compagnia) in Florence.
