'천년의 신명' 강릉단오제 개막···치유·즐길거리 가득 - Gangneung Danoje Festival celebrates 1,000 years of tradition

유네스코 인류무형문화유산이자 국가무형유산인 '2026 강릉단오제'가 오는 22일까지 강원도 강릉시 남대천 일대를 뜨겁게 달군다.

The Gangneung Danoje Festival, a traditional event originating from ancient harvest and agricultural rites passed on in its traditional form and designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and National Intangible Cultural Heritage, runs through June 22 around Namdaecheon Stream in Gangneung, Gangwon-do Province.

단오(음력 5월 5일·올해는 양력 6월 19일)는 설날, 추석과 함께 한국의 3대 명절 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 양기가 가장 왕성한 날로 한여름의 더위를 건강하게 이겨내자는 의미를 지닌다.

Dano, one of the nation's three major holidays along with Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), falls on the fifth day of the fifth month under the lunar calendar, which is June 19 this year. As the day when the positive force yang is considered at its strongest level, this occasion carries the meaning of overcoming the summer heat in good health.

올해 축제를 관통하는 주제는 '풀리니, 단오다'다. 신명나는 굿판에서 한을 풀고(마음의 짐을 내려놓고) 창포물로 액을 씻어내며 일상의 근심과 액운을 내려놓는 순간 마음과 관계가 풀린다는 단오의 가치를 담아냈다.

The theme this year, "Unfolding the Spirit of Dano," reflects the value of Dano as participants relieve their sorrow through lively shamanic rituals and wash away misfortune with iris water, finding peace in mind and relationships.

행사 기간에는 제례와 굿을 비롯해 전통 공연, 민속놀이, 체험 프로그램 등 70여 개 행사가 펼쳐진다. 특히 동해안과 남해안, 전남 진도 지역의 전통 굿을 한자리에서 비교해 보며 한국 굿 문화가 가진 위로와 치유의 의미를 되짚어보는 공연이 관람객을 맞이한다.

The some 70 events over the festival period include ancestral and shamanistic rituals, traditional performing arts, folk games and experiential activities. Visitors can see shamanistic rituals from the eastern and southern coasts and Jindo-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province, to ponder the meaning of comfort and healing inherent in Korean shamanistic culture.

해외 공연단의 참여도 눈길을 끈다. 필리핀, 태국, 일본, 중국, 몽골 등 5개국 예술단이 무대에 오른다. Performing arts troupes from the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China and Mongolia will also take part.

외국인 방문객 편의를 위해 영어 누리집을 전면 개편하고 외국어 안내와 해설 프로그램도 대폭 확충했다. The event's English-language website has been revamped and guided tours in foreign languages have been greatly expanded to enhance convenience for international visitors.

올해 축제 드레스코드는 한복이다. 한복을 입고 축제장을 찾은 관람객에게는 푸드코트 10% 할인 혜택과 함께 단오체험촌 기념 배지 증정 등 풍성한 이벤트를 마련해 축제의 멋과 흥을 더할 예정이다.

The dress code for this year's festival is Hanbok (traditional clothes). Visitors who wear Hanbok to the event get a 10% discount at the food court and a "Danoje experience village" souvenir badge.
