한국인은 실내에 들어올 때 현관에서 신발을 벗고 들어온다. 또한 실내에서 의자를 사용하지 않고 바닥에 앉으며, 방바닥에 이불을 깔고 잔다. 이러한 한국인의 좌식 생활은 온돌 난방법에서 비롯된 것이다. 온돌은 아궁이에서 불을 때서 방 전체를 덥게 하는 전통적인 난방 장치이다. 방바닥 밑에 있는 넓적한 돌을 뜨겁게 하면 따뜻한 공기는 위로 올라가고 차가운 공기는 아래로 내려가서 방 전체를 따뜻하게 해 주는 것이다.

온돌은 몸을 따뜻하게 하고 몸 안의 피가 잘 통하게 해 준다고 하여 여성들에게 특히 인기가 있다. 현대식 건물에 도 온돌 효과를 이용한 난방을 설치하거나 해외에 살고 있는 교포들이 온돌방을 그리워하는 것을 보아도 온돌이 여전히 한국인에게 인기가 있음을 알 수 있다. 최근에는 온돌 난방법을 이용한 '돌침대'나 '찜질방'의 인기도 높다.
