어릴 적 한국 연극 무대 위, 외할머니를 바라보며 막연한 꿈을 키우던 소녀가 세계 무대에서 주목받는 배우로 성장했다. 할리우드의 새로운 아이콘으로 떠오른 한국계 호주 배우 하예린의 이야기다.
A Korean Australian girl who dreamed of acting while watching her grandmother performing in theater is now a rising actor on the global stage: Ha Yerin.
넷플릭스(Netflix) 오리지널 간판 시리즈 ‘브리저튼’ 시즌4에서 아시아계 주인공을 맡은 하예린이 4일 서울 중구 커뮤니티하우스 마실에서 열린 내한 기자간담회에서 작품을 마친 소회와 배우로서 품어온 정체성을 진솔하게 털어놓았다.
Playing a major Asian character in the fourth season of "Bridgerton," an original Netflix series, she spoke candidly on March 4 about her identity as an actor and the production at a news conference held at Community House Masil in Seoul's Jung-gu District.
‘브리저튼’ 시리즈는 미국 소설가 줄리아 퀸의 동명 소설을 원작으로 2020년 첫 제작된 작품이다. 19세기 영국을 배경으로 귀족 사회의 사교 문화를 현대적 감각으로 풀어내 세계적인 인기를 얻었다. 시즌4에서는 베네딕트 브리저튼(루크 톰슨)과 소피 백(하예린)의 로맨스를 중심으로 이야기가 전개된다. 지난달 26일 8개 에피소드가 모두 공개된 직후 넷플릭스 글로벌 영어 쇼 부문 82개국 1위에 오르며 시리즈의 저력을 과시했다.
Based on the eponymous novel by American author Julia Quinn, the drama debuted in 2020. Set in 19th-century England, it has gained global popularity for portraying aristocratic social culture through a contemporary lens.
The latest season focuses on the romance between Benedict Bridgerton (played by actor Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek (Ha). Since the release of its eight episodes on Feb. 26, the fourth season of the series has topped the Netflix charts for shows in English in 82 countries.

호주에서 태어난 하예린은 한국 계원예술고등학교에서 연기를 공부하고 이후 호주 국립극예술원(NIDA)에 진학했다. 졸업 공연을 준비하던 중 오디션을 통해 스티븐 스필버그가 제작한 파라마운트+ 드라마 '헤일로'(2022년)에 출연해 이름을 알렸다.
Born in Australia, Ha returned to Korea to study acting at Kaywon High School of Arts and later attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. While preparing for her graduation performance, she auditioned for and landed a role in the Paramount Plus series "Halo," whose executive director is Steven Spielberg.
그에게 배우의 꿈을 심어준 사람은 한국 연극계 원로배우인 외할머니 손숙이다. 그는 “어릴 때 매년 한국에 올 때마다 외할머니의 연극을 봤었는데 그중 외할머니의 1인극을 본 기억이 가장 뚜렷하게 남아 있다”고 했다. “아기처럼 베개를 안고 우는 장면이었는데 관객들도 함께 울었다. 연극으로 공감과 위로를 줄 수 있는 배우라는 직업의 멋짐을 깨달았고 외할머니에게 영감을 정말 크게 받았다”고 했다.
Ha said her maternal grandmother, Son Sook, a veteran actor in Korean theater, inspired her to pursue acting.
"When I was little, I watched my grandmother's plays every time I came to Korea, and the one I remember most is her one-woman show," Ha said.
"One scene had her cry like a baby while hugging a pillow, and the audience cried along. I recognized the beauty of being an actor, being able to offer empathy and comfort through theater. I was greatly inspired by my grandmother."
82세의 나이에도 손숙은 현재 연극 ‘노인의 꿈’을 무대에 올리며 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 하예린은 “내일 다시 외할머니의 공연을 보러 갈 예정이다”며 웃었다.
At age 82, Son still performs on stage, most recently in the play "The Dream of an Old Woman."
Ha said, "I plan to go watch her performance again tomorrow."

서양 시대극이라는 배경에 한국계 배우의 등장은 ‘브리저튼’ 시리즈가 지향해온 현대적 재해석의 가치를 선명하게 보여줬다.
The appearance of an ethnic Korean in a Western period drama clearly shows the value of modern reinterpretation pursued by "Bridgerton."
원작 소설의 '소피 베켓'은 하예린의 합류와 함께 '소피 백'(Baek)으로 재탄생했다. 그는 “합격 통보 후 화상 미팅에서 소피의 성 '베켓'을 한국 성씨로 바꾸는 게 어떻냐'는 제안을 받았고, 'B'로 시작하는 성을 고민하다가 '백'씨를 이야기했다” 며 “한국계 배우로서 제 정체성에 맞게 성을 바꾸는 것이 너무 속 시원했고 고마웠다”고 말했다.
The novel's character Sophie Beckett in the series is depicted as Sophie Baek.
"After I was told I got the role, I was asked in a video conference if I could change Sophie's surname 'Beckett' to a Korean one," Ha said.
"I thought of Korean surnames starting with 'B' and suggested 'Baek.'
It felt refreshing and gratifying as an actor of Korean descent to change the surname to better reflect my identity
인종 다양성 또한 ‘브리저튼’ 시리즈가 내세우는 특징 중 하나다. 할리우드가 유색인 배우들에게 점점 더 열린 환경으로 변화하고 있음을 체감한다는 하예린은 "동양인을 대변해 변화를 선도하는 역할을 맡을 수 있어 기쁘고 무거운 책임감을 느낀다"고 강조했다.
Racial diversity is a key feature in "Bridgerton." Saying she senses Hollywood's growing openness to actors of color, Ha said, "I'm both happy and feel a great responsibility to play a role in leading this change by representing Asians."
'브리저튼' 다음 시즌 출연을 예고한 그는 한국 작품 활동을 향한 기대도 전했다. “기회가 된다면 한국 작품으로도 인사드리고 싶다” 며 “특히 한국 작품으로 국제영화제 무대에 설 수 있다면 더없이 영광일 것 같다”고 했다.
She also expressed hope for working in Korean productions.
"If given the opportunity, I want to debut in a Korean production," she said.
"I would consider it a great honor to stand at an international film festival through a Korean movie."
