by 난지도는 1978년 이전까지 땅콩을 재배하던 곳이었다. 그 당시에는 홍수가 나면 집이 물에 잠기는 고통을 겪기도 했지만 소풍 장소나 데이트 코스로 사랑받았던 아름다운 섬이었다. 그러나 1978년부터 서울시가 난지도를 쓰레기 매립지로 사용하기 시작한 이후에 난지도는 악취와 먼지로 가득한 섬이 되었다. 그러다 1991년 10월부터 난지도에 쓰레기를 반입하는 것이 금지되었다. 이후 난지도는 다시 수풀이 우거진 녹지로 변했고 2002년 5월에는 월드컵 공원으로 새롭게 태어났다. 현재 월드컵 공원은 '환경 월드컵'의 상징물로 습지와 꽃밭, 연못, 요트장, 흙길로 된 마라톤 코스 등을 갖추고 아름다운 생태 공원으로 주목받고 있다.
Peanuts were grown until 1978 at Nanjido. At that time, although people suffered when they had floods, it was still a beloved place for a picnics and for dates. However, after Nanjido has been used to the place to bury waste since 1978, it has quickly become an island full of foul smell and dust. Since October 1991, however, it has been prohibited to bring waste into Nanjido. Soon after, the island has gotten back to its original feature. In May 2002, it has been made to be the World Cup Park. It is attracting many people in Seoul as the symbol of 'Environmental World Cup' with swamps, gardens, pond, a place for yachting, and marathon soil-roads. It has become a beautiful eco-friendly park again.
