한국의 봉사 활동은 기본적으로 서로를 돕는 정신에서부터 시작되었다. 예를 들어 신라 시대에서 부터 있었던 계(契)를 비롯해서 두레, 품앗이 등은 서로를 돕는 공동체 활동의 다양한 형태들이다. 계는 주로 경제적인 도움을 주고받거나 친목을 도모하기 위하여 만든 협동 조직이고, 두레는 농민들이 농번기에 농사일을 공동으로 하기 위하여 부락이나 마을 단위로 만든 조직이다. 품앗이는 일을 하는 품'과 교환한다는 '앗이'가 결합된 말로 힘든 일을 서로 거들어 주면서 품을 지고 갚고 하는 일을 말한다.
The voluntary service in Korea fundamentally origins from the spirit of helping others. For example, kye since Silla Dynasty, dure, and pumasi are different types of community activities that help others. kye was made mostly in order to give and receive economic help or to promote fraternity. Dure was made to help one another's farm work during the busy Tady pure was made season, and it was organized within the unit of village. Pumasi is a complex word of 'pum' which means working and 'asi' which means exchange. Therefore, pumasi means to help each other with working.
이후 한국에 기독교가 보급되면서 서로 돕는 개념에서 남을 돕는 개념의 봉사 활동이 나타나게 되었다. 이러한 봉사 활동은 국내의 어린이, 여성, 노인 등 사회적 약자의 복지 향상에 주력하는 양상으로 이루어졌다. 현대에 들어서 봉사 활동의 범위는 해외에까지 확대되었을 뿐만 아니라 생활의 모든 영역에서 실시되고 있다. 봉사 활동에 참여하는 사람들 또한 많아지고 다양해져서 어린이, 청소년, 대학생, 여성, 노인은 물론 개인의 차원을 넘어서 기업 단위의 참여도 증가하였다. 이렇게 다양한 차원의 사회 구성원이 참여하게 되면서 단순한 노력 봉사나 재정적 지원에서 벗어나 자신의 전문적 지식과 기술을 제공하는 형태의 봉사 활동도 나타나게 되었다.
Afterwards, when Christianity spread widely in Korea, the concept of voluntary service having the meaning of helping each other emerged. This kind of voluntary service focuses on the minors such as, children, women, and elders. In modern society, the range of voluntary service has broaden to oversea and in every field people's daily life. More people are participating in voluntary service, and it is getting more various, thus, children, teenagers, college students, women and even elders, as well as companies are participating in it. With the participation of diverse population, there has been a new kind of community service such as requiring special knowledge and skill apart from merely physical labor or support of finance.
