한국이 인구 대비 인공지능(AI) 특허 건수에서 세계 1위를 차지했다. '주목할 만한 AI 모델' 보유 수에서도 3위에 올랐다. Korea tops the world in the number of artificial intelligence (AI) patents per capita and ranks third in the number of notable AI models.

스탠퍼드대 인간중심AI연구소(HAI: Human-Centered AI)가 13일(현지 시간) 발표한 ‘2026 AI 지표’ 보고서에 따르면 한국은 2024년 기준 인구 10만 명당 AI 특허 14.31건을 보유해 세계에서 가장 앞서 나갔다.

The 2026 AI Index report released on April 13 by Stanford University Institute for Human-Centered AI said Korea as of 2024 led the world with 14.31 AI patents per 100,000 people.

룩셈부르크(12.25건), 중국(6.95건), 미국(4.68건), 일본(4.3건)을 상당한 차이로 따돌린 수치다.

The country's figure was significantly higher than those of Luxembourg (12.25), China (6.95), United States (4.68) and Japan (4.3).

전체 특허 건수에서는 중국이 74.24%로 1위, 미국은 12.06%로 2위였다. 그러나 인구 규모를 고려한 ‘혁신 밀도’에서는 한국이 가장 높았다.

In the total number of patents, China led the world with 74.24%, followed by the United States with 12.06%. But Korea was No. 1 in "innovation density," which considers population size.

기술적 성과도 두드러진다. 한국은 지난해 출시된 주목할 만한 AI 모델 5개를 보유해 미국(50개), 중국(30개)에 이어 세계 3위를 기록했다.

In technological achievements, Korea ranked third with five notable AI models released last year, trailing only the United States (50) and China (30).

생성형 AI 이용률 역시 한국이 가장 빠르게 증가했다. 지난해 상반기 25.9%에서 하반기 30.7%로 4.8%포인트(p) 상승했다. 조사 대상 30개 지역 가운데 가장 큰 증가 폭이다.

Korea also had the fastest growth in the use of generative AI, going from 25.9% in the first half of last year to 30.7% in the second for the biggest jump among the 30 regions surveyed.

입법 등 정책적 뒷받침도 탄탄하다. 지난 2016년부터 2025년까지 한국은 AI 관련 법안 17건을 제정했다. G20 국가 중 미국(25건)에 이어 두 번째로 활발한 입법 활동을 펼친 것으로 나타났다.

Legislative and other policy support were also strong. From 2016 to last year, 17 AI-related bills were enacted, the second most among the G20 economies behind the United States (25).
