Grammar (Pages 169–170)

1. Verb + -게 하다

This expression is used to indicate that the subject makes someone else do some behavior, it is formed by adding -게 하다 to the verb stem. With intransitive verbs  ‘N1 이/가 N2을/를 V-게 하다’ is used, while with transitive verbs ‘N1 이/가 N2에게 V-게 하다’ is used.

2. Verb + -아/어 가다, -아/어 오다

Meaning: indicating a continuing action or process.
This structure expresses an action or change that is in progress over time.

  • -아/어 가다: Indicates the process going forward from the present into the future.

  • -아/어 오다: Indicates the process coming up to now from the past.

Angela: People think I’m adjusting well, so I felt embarrassed to ask. What should I do in situations like this?
Dmitry: In cases like that, the best thing to do is to keep asking people around you if what you did is correct.

발음:

ㄴ첨가 (Insertion of ㄴ Sound):
When two words are combined, if the first word ends in a final consonant (받침) and the second word begins with one of the vowels '이, 야, 여, 요, 유', a ㄴ sound is inserted between them. This inserted ㄴ results in a new pronunciation: [니, 냐, 녀, 뇨, 뉴].

Rule:
받침 + '이, 야, 여, 요, 유'
→ 받침 + [니, 냐, 녀, 뇨, 뉴]

Examples:

  • 담 + 요 → [담뇨]

  • 꽃 + 잎 → [꼰닙]

  • 식용 + 유 → [시굥뉴]

샐러리맨, 직장 생활의 어려움 이렇게 이겨 낸다

잡코리아가 직장인 1,049명을 대상으로 직장에서 가장 힘든 일과 힘든 일을 어떻게 이겨 내는지 설문 조사실시했다. 첫 번째는 직장 생활을 하면서 언제 힘든지 물어봤다. 가장 많은 대답은 직장인들은 대인 관계 때문에 스트레스를 받아서 힘들다는 것이었다. 직장에서는 성격이 다른 다양한 사람과 같이 일해야 하고 사장님, 부장님, 차장님, 대리님 등의 상사와의 상하 관계도 어렵다고 한다. 다음으로 야근을 하거나 주말에 출근을 해야 할 때 힘들다고 한다. 야근이나 주말 근무를 하면 수당을 받기는 하지만 쉬지 못해 피로쌓이기 때문에 힘들다고 한다. 그리고 자기가 하는 일에서 좋은 성과얻어야 하는 부담감도 직장인들을 힘들게 하는 이유 중의 하나라고 한다.

다음으로 직장 생활을 하면서 어려움을 극복해 가기 위해 무엇을 하는지 물어봤다. 많은 사람들이 시간이 있으면 아무것도 하지 않고 휴식을 하면서 스트레스를 푸는 것이 최고의 방법이라고 했다. 그리고 자신이 좋아하는 일을 하거나 취미 생활을 하면서 재충전을 한다고 했다. 또한 힘들게 일을 해서 번 돈으로 자신이 좋아하는 것을 사는 것도 기분이 좋아지는 일이라고 했다.

Salarymen: How They Overcome the Difficulties of Work Life

JobKorea conducted a survey of 1,049 office workers about the most difficult aspects of work life and how they overcome those challenges. The first question asked was when they felt work was the hardest. The most common response was that interpersonal relationships were the most stressful and difficult aspect of office life. In the workplace, one has to work with many people who have different personalities, and hierarchical relationships with superiors like the CEO, department head, deputy manager, and assistant manager can also be challenging.

The next most common difficulty was working overtime or coming in on weekends. Although they receive extra pay for overtime or weekend work, the inability to rest causes fatigue to build up, making it difficult to endure. Additionally, the pressure to achieve good results in their tasks was cited as another major reason office workers find work life hard.

The survey then asked how people overcome these difficulties. Many respondents said that when they have time, simply doing nothing and resting is the best way to relieve stress. Others said they recharge by doing things they enjoy or engaging in hobbies. Also, spending the money they earned through hard work on things they like was mentioned as something that lifts their mood.

워라밸 Work-Life balance

얼마 전까지만 해도 한국 사람들은 사회에서 인정을 받고 직장에서 승진하고 높은 연봉을 받는 것이 성공이라고 생각했다. 그러나 최근에는 그런 사회적 성공보다 개인의 행복이 더 중요하다는 생각을 하는 사람이 많아지고 있다.

이에 따라 일과 개인 생활의 균형을 의미하는 '워라밸(work-life balance)'이라는 말이 생겨났다. 그리고 직장인들이 야근보다는 정시에 퇴근해서 '저녁이 있는 삶'을 살기를 원하면서 정부도 근로자의 주당 근로 시간을 최대 52시간으로 줄이게 되었다. 이런 워라밸을 중시하는 문화는 젊은 대학생과 직장인들 사이에서 먼저 시작되었는데 그들이 생각하는 행복은 기존의 행복 개념과는 다른 것이다. 따라서 그들은 큰 성공보다는 작지만 확실한 행복이 인생에서 더 중요하다는 뜻의 '소확행'이라는 말도 만들어 냈다.

Until not long ago, many Koreans believed that success meant being recognized in society, getting promoted at work, and earning a high salary. However, recently, more and more people are beginning to think that personal happiness is more important than such social achievements.

As a result, the term "work-life balance" (워라밸), which refers to the balance between work and personal life, was created. As more office workers desire to leave work on time rather than work overtime and live a “life with evenings,” the government has also reduced the maximum weekly working hours to 52.

This culture that values work-life balance began among young university students and office workers. Their idea of happiness differs from traditional concepts of happiness. Thus, they even created the term “소확행” (so-hwak-haeng), meaning “small but certain happiness,” expressing the belief that small, sure moments of happiness are more important in life than big successes.
