Things to Check When Looking for a House
When looking for a house, there are things that need to be checked carefully. The most important thing when visiting houses is to examine the condition of the inside of the house and the surrounding area. For example, check whether the house gets enough sunlight, whether it is free from noise, whether water, electricity, and heating work well, and whether any facilities (doors, windows, sink, washbasin, toilet, etc.) are broken. Also, check whether there are convenient facilities nearby, whether the area is safe, and whether transportation is convenient.
꼼꼼하다: meticulous, thorough, careful
살펴보다: to examine, to look over
예를 들어: for example
싱크대: sink (kitchen sink)
세면대: washbasin (bathroom sink)
고장나다: to break down, to be out of order
If you like the house and want to sign a contract, it is safest to make the contract directly with the landlord. If a real estate agent signs the contract on your behalf, accidents may occur. Also, you should carefully read the contract, check if the deposit account belongs to the landlord, and write down in detail any special contract terms such as house repairs. If you only talk about these verbally, the landlord may not keep the promises when a problem occurs with the house. Especially, make sure to check the certified copy of the registration (등기부 등본). This is because there are cases where someone pretends to be the landlord, sells or rents out someone else's house, and then runs away.
잔금: remaining balance
이삿짐: moving luggage, belongings for moving
옮기다: to move, to transfer
확정: confirmation, final decision
(Page 152)
Shared Housing (Share House)
Share houses are rental homes shared by two or more people, and they have recently been rapidly spreading among the younger generation. In a share house, residents share common spaces such as the living room, kitchen, and other convenience areas (like laundry rooms, gyms, or study rooms), while still maintaining their own private spaces. Naturally, the monthly rent each person pays in a share house is cheaper than nearby individual rentals, and with a minimum contract period of just one month, it has become popular among young professionals just starting their careers. The popularity of share houses isn’t solely due to economic reasons. In the evenings or on weekends, residents can cook, dine, chat, and enjoy leisure time or hobbies together, which is also considered a major benefit. Living together yet separately in a share house helps reduce rent and living costs, while also offering the chance to experience diverse relationships and daily lifestyles — making it a growing part of modern housing culture among the younger generation.
