Grammar Focus:
-(으)ㄹ까요? expresses in question form the supposition of an action or state that has yet to happen. It corresponds to ‘I wonder if...’ or ‘Do you think...?’ in English. In response, -(으)ㄹ 거예요 and -(으)ㄴ/는 것 같아요 are often used. When the verb or adjective stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, -ㄹ 까요? is used, and when the stem ends in a consonant, -을까요? is used. In the case of a past tense supposition, -았/었- is added in front of -(으)ㄹ까요? to form -았/었을까요?
Conversation:
A: 요즘 꽃이 비쌀까요?
Do you think flowers are expensive these days?
B: 졸업식 때니까 비쌀 거예요.
It’s graduation time, so I think they’re probably expensive.
A: 이 번에 누가 승진을 할까요?
Who do you think will get promoted this time?
B: 댄 씨가 일을 잘하니까 이번에 승진할 거예요.
Dane is a hard worker, so I think he'll be promoted this time.
A: 지금 가면 길이 막힐까요? Do you think there will be much traffic if we go now?
B: 아니요, 이 시간에는 길이 안 막혀요.
No. There’s not much traffic this time of day.
