Grammar Focus:
-(으)ㄴ/는데 is used when the first clause expresses the reason or background situation for the second clause and also when the first clause provides content introducing the second clause. It corresponds to ‘so/therefore’ and ‘and’ in English. When added to adjectives, -ㄴ데 is added to stems ending in a vowel, and -은데 is added to stems ending in a consonant. When added to verbs, -는데 is added to the stem.





Conversation:
A: 요코 씨가 회사원이에요? Is Yoko employed at a company?
B: 아니요, 아직 학생인데 올해 졸업할 거예요.
No, she’s still a student, but she is going to graduate this year.

A: 학교 근처에 어느 식당이 괜찮아요?
Where’s a good restaurant near the school?
B: 학교 옆에 ‘만나 식당’이 괜찮은데 거기 한번 가 보세요.
The restaurant Manna right next to school is pretty good, so I suggest you go there.

A: 이 옷을 어제 샀는데 마음에 안 들어요.
I bought these clothes yesterday, but I’m not pleased with them.
B: 왜요? 지수 씨한테 잘 어울려요.
 Why? They look fine on you (Ji-su).
