우리나라 버스의 난폭 운전은 심각한 상황입니다. 한국운수산업연구원이 국가별 버스 교통 사고를 비교해 보니, 우리나라는 버스 교통 사고 사망자가 전체 교통 사고 사망자 가운데 2.9%의 비중을 차지하고 있습니다. 이에 대해 버스 기사들은, 난폭 운전이 몸에 밴 일부 기사들이 있는 것은 사실이라면서도 “근무 환경 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 난폭 운전을 하는 경우가 적지 않다”고 토로 하고 있습니다. 이들은 순수하게 운전하는 시간만 하루 평균 15∼16시간에 달합니다. 그런데 이들이 다음 운행 전에 쉬는 시간은 짧은 경우 20분 정도에 불과합니다. 오랜 운행과 짧은 배차 간격으로 방광염을 앓고 있는 운전자도 상당수입니다. 한 버스 운전자는 “무리 없이 운전해도 종점에 가서 30∼40분 쉴 수 있다면 좋은데, 실상은 신호 위반, 과속 등을 해야 겨우 30분이 남아 밥도 먹고 화장실도 마음 편히 갈 수 있다”고 말했습니다.
