한국에는 찜질방이라는 특별한 장소가 있다. 간단하게 설명하자면 대중 목욕탕인데, 목욕 뿐만이 아닌 여러 종류의 사우나도 함께 즐길 수 있는 곳이다. 물론 찜질방에는 이 뿐만이 아니라 일반적으로 사람들이 쉴 수 있는 거대한 홀과 식당, 헬스장, PC방, 노래방 등도 함께 있는데, 이처럼 다양한 재미를 한 번에 느낄 수 있는 찜질방은 실제로도 한국에서 가족, 친구, 연인들이 함께 찾는 한국 문화에 대해 얘기할때 빼놓을 수 없는 장소 중 하나다.
In Korea, there are special places called jjimjilbang. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, a jjimjilbang is basically a public, clothed coed sauna and bathhouse where you can take baths and also enjoy different types of saunas. On top of these facilities, these places also house large resting halls, restaurants, health centers, Internet cafes and noraebangs, or Korean singing rooms. For all the amenities and entertainment that these spaces offer to families, friends and lovebirds alike, it's no wonder that it's virtually impossible to discuss Korea without talking about the jjimjilbang experience.
덕분에 한국 영화나 드라마에서도 자주 찜질방을 볼 수 있는데, 직접 체험해보지 않고 말로만 들어선 쉽게 상상이 되지 않는 곳이기도 하다. 나 또한 한국에 방문한 가족들에게 찜질방에 대해서 설명한 적이 있었는데, 처음에는 이상하게 생각하던 가족들도 실제로 방문한 뒤에는 찜질방의 매력을 알고 상당히 즐거워했던 기억이 있다. 여러분도 한국에 방문하게 되면 꼭 한 번 찜질방을 방문하시길 바라면서 오늘은 한국의 찜질방에 대해서 이야기해 보도록 하겠다.
We often see characters in Korean dramas and films hanging out in these bathhouses, but a vicarious experience is really not enough to get the full picture. When my family was visiting me in Korea, I tried to convince them of the appeals of jjimjilbang with little success. One visit, though, was all it took to get them hooked. In hoping that those of you uninitiated in the ways of jjimjilbang will give it a try the next time you're in Korea, here is a quick introduction to the world of Korean bathhouses.
찜질방은 그 안에 워낙에 다양한 공간들이 많기 때문에 건물의 한 층 전체가 찜질방인 경우가 많다. 심지어는 한 고층 건물 중 세개의 층이 모두 찜질방의 소유였던 곳도 있었다. 이러한 찜질방에 들어가려면 우선 입장표를 먼저 구입해야 한다. 찜질방 안에선 찜질방에서 주는 정해진 찜질복만 입을 수 있는데, 일반적으로 입장표를 구입할 때 옷도 함께 주지만, 이따금씩 탈의실 안에서 입장표를 옷과 교환해 받기도 한다.
Given the wide range of activities that make up the jjimjilbang experience, many bathhouses take up an entire floor of a building. There are even some establishments that stretch over three floors of a high-rise. To enter one of these places, you first need to purchase a ticket. While you're getting your ticket, you're given the standard bathhouse outfits to change into, though sometimes you exchange your ticket for the outfits inside the changing rooms.
이렇게 입장표와 찜질복을 받고 나면 남녀가 각각 떨어져서 각자의 성별에 맞는 대중 목욕탕으로 들어가게 되는데, 이 곳에서 가볍게 샤워를 하고 옷을 갈아 입은 뒤 홀에서 다시 만날 수 있게 된다.
Once you've received your ticket and a change of clothes, the men and women go off into public baths separated by sex. There, you can take a quick rinse in the shower, change into the bathhouse clothes and then get together with your friends or partners in the main hall.
이 곳에서는 많은 사람들이 음식을 먹거나, 이야기를 나누며 쉬곤 하는데, 앞서 받은 찜질복만 입을 수가 있기 때문에 처음 이 곳에 입장하게 되면 똑같은 옷을 입고 있는 수많은 사람들과 마주치게 될 것이다. 지금은 익숙하지만, 처음에는 이 모습이 상당히 재미있고 신기했던 기억이 있다. 일반적으로 반바지와 반발 티셔츠로 되어 있는 이 찜질복은 도난을 방지하기 위해 찜질방의 이름이 한글로 새겨져 있다.
In the halls, people usually eat snacks while chatting with their friends. As everyone must wear the same clothes, you'll run into tens of people in identical outfits. You get used to this after a while, but I remember when I saw a room full of strangers in matching outfits for the first time I couldn't help but feel both amazed and amused. Usually, you're given shorts and a T-shirt that have the name of the establishment embroidered on them, as a way to prevent them from getting stolen.
보통 이 홀을 중심으로 여러 개의 사우나들에 들어갈 수가 있는데 각 방은 인테리어나 방의 온도 등에 따라서 소금방, 아이스방과 같이 각각 다른 이름을 갖고 있다. 이렇게 서로 다른 방을 차례차례 들어가 보는 것도 하나의 재미인데, 일반적으로 러시아와 비교하면 체감 온도 자체는 그렇게 뜨겁게 느껴지진 않는 편이다.
Many different types of saunas are usually centered around a main hall, and each room or sauna has a special name, like the Salt Room or the Ice Room, given to match the room's temperature or decorative theme. Checking out each special room is another fun pastime, though I would say that, compared to Russian saunas, the temperatures in these rooms aren't as hot as what I'm used to.
내가 개인적으로 러시아의 사우나에서 느끼는 가장 좋은 장점은 사우나를 다녀오면 많은 양의 땀을 흘리고 다시 새로 태어난 것 같은 기분을 느낄 수 있다는 점인데, 한국 찜질방은 이런 기분이 비교적 덜하다. 이렇게 느껴지는 가장 큰 이유는 습도가 아닐까 싶은데, 러시아에 비해 한국 찜질방의 사우나들은 습도가 낮은 편이어서 실제 온도는 비슷한데도 느껴지는 뜨거움에 있어선 훨씬 덜 뜨겁게 느껴진다. 하지만 한국 찜질방의 이러한 점은 반대로 남녀노소가 즐길 수 있다는 장점이 되기도 하는데, 실제로도 한국의 찜질방에는 러시아와는 달리 비교적 많은 어린 아이들을 볼 수 있다. 친구들과 함께 재미있는 시간도 보냈고 사우나에서 실컷 땀도 흘렸다면, 처음의 대중 목욕탕에서 다시 목욕을 한 뒤, 원래의 옷으로 갈아 입고 찜질방 밖을 나서면 된다.
In Russia, I enjoy going to the saunas because after a session of profuse sweating, I feel like I'm reborn. In my experience, I felt less of this at Korean jjimjilbangs, maybe due to the difference in humidity. Compared to Russian saunas, Korean saunas have lower humidity, which is why even at the same temperature, the heat can feel less intense. Though seen from another angle, it's probably the reduced heat intensity that makes it easier for men and women of all ages to enjoy Korean saunas together. In fact, this may be why there are more children at Korean saunas than you will ever see at similar Russian establishments.
After you've chatted with your friends and spent some time relaxing in the saunas, you can return to the separated bathing sections, take a rinse, change back into your clothes and go back out into the real world again.
한국 찜질방의 흥미로운 사실은 대부분 24시간 동안 영업을 한다는 것이다. 그렇다보니 목욕뿐만 아니라 밤에 홀에서 잠을 자는 사람들도 있는데, 여행을 갔을 때 여행지 근처의 찜질방에서 잠을 잔다거나 밤에 늦게까지 술을 마시다가 집에 가는 마지막 차를 놓쳐서 찜질방을 찾는 사람들도 생각보다 많다고 한다.
What is interesting about Korean saunas is the fact that they usually stay open 24 hours a day, around the clock. Thanks to this convenience, there are sometimes people who sleep there for the night in the main hall. Whilst traveling, you may decide to sleep at a jjimjilbang in place of finding a hostel. Apparently, quite a number of people who stay out too late drinking and miss the last bus or train simply camp out at these saunas until sunrise the next day.
러시아에는 사우나에서 술을 마신 뒤 너무 취해서 다른 집을 찾아간 남자에 관한 유명한 로맨스 영화가 있다. 그 정도로 러시아 사우나에선 술을 마시는 게 자연스러운 모습인데 반해, 한국의 찜질방에서는 술을 마실 수가 없다. 단순히 마실 수 없을 뿐만이 아니라, 이미 술을 너무 많이 마셔서 심하게 취한 손님들의 경우 입장 자체가 불가능하니 꼭 주의해야 한다.
In Russia, there is a famous romantic comedy about a man who gets drunk at a sauna and then goes knocking on the wrong house in the wrong city. As demonstrated by this movie, drinking at a sauna is a very natural thing in Russia, but at Korean jjimjilbangs it's strictly prohibited. Not only are you not allowed to drink inside the establishment, if you arrive there too inebriated you will not be granted entry, so it's a good idea to keep this in mind on your next visit.
