Many people talk about video games when they talk about Korea. One of the most-asked questions received by Korean students studying abroad is, “Are you good at playing video games, too?” In fact, I haven’t been that interested in video games. While writing this story, I learned a lot about a sensation involving video games that has long swept Korea, much of which surprised me. I want to share with you some of it.

Anyone who enjoys playing video games probably knows a game called “League of Legends" (LOL). You might know a Korean player, named Faker, as well, who is a professional gamer with countless prizes and awards from international competitions. There are more Korean video gamers like him who have proved their outstanding skills by sweeping lots of prizes at E-sports, or electronic sports, competitions.

Non-Korean players from around the world even crack jokes that whether or not they have a Korean member on their team makes or breaks the game. However, that begs the question: When did Korean players start to stand out in the video game industry, and why?

I could find some answers to this in the environment and values in and with which Korean players live. There are "PC-bangs" (ํ”ผ์”จ๋ฐฉ), or internet cafes, all across the nation. They look like any old internet cafe that can be found in any other country, but they're more like a training ground for online gamers. In this Korean version of an internet cafe, you can not only rent a variety of video game equipment but also enjoy playing games with very fast internet access based on the country's state-of-the-art computers equipped with high levels of hardware.

Such PC-bangs started to emerge across Korea about 20 years ago in the mid-1990s. They were like normal internet cafes, at first, where people enjoyed the internet over a cup of tea, but they gradually transformed into a venue specifically for online video games. By that time, though, not many Korean people actually visited these internet cafes.

It was in the late 1990s that PC-bangs started to grow in popularity and spring up across the nation, ever since Blizzard Entertainment, one of California's leading video game makers, launched two sensational games: "StarCraft" and "Diablo." However, many homes across Korea didn’t have computers, and even those with computers didn’t allow people to have fast access to the internet, as they do today. That’s why people would go to PC-bangs: to play games.

Many Korean video gamers frequented PC-bangs in their neighborhoods, mainly because they could enjoy video games together with their friends. It became very common to see young students hanging out with their peers at PC-bangs after school. They naturally got used to being in the rat race, beating and losing friends and acquaintances, from an early age.

As computers came into wider use and the interest got even faster -- faster than in many other countries -- Koreans have grown more connected to the internet, and of course, to video games. The problem is that, in playing video games, most people value results over process. They try to seek the fastest way to win a video game. It can translate into focusing on solving a puzzle faster than others, rather than enjoying the process of finding answers to each puzzle.

How they try to get a competitive edge, to defeat others, rather than to enjoy the game itself, can be seen everywhere across modern South Korean society. For example, parents splurge on private tutoring lessons so that their children can supposedly get higher scores and stay ahead of their peers, to a point where it's hard to find students who don’t go to after-school private classes. Many "survival" TV shows, like singing contests that pit young singers against each other, also enjoy some of the highest-ever ratings.

Although some might see this “result-oriented” attitude, so prevalent across modern South Korean society, as being negative, I would say that the passion of Korean video gamers is admirable and inspirational for others.
