[Korean grammar] -게 하다 Causative Expressions

나: 한 시간이나 기다리게 하면 어떻게 해요?

가: 자야 씨에게 주려고 산 꽃이에요.
I bought this flower to give to you, Jaya.
나: 정말이요? 양강 씨는 저를 너무 행복하게 해요.
Really? Yang Gang, you’ve really made my day.

1. This expression is used to indicate that the subject makes someone else do some behavior, it is formed by adding -게 하다 to the verb stem. With intransitive verbs  ‘N1 이/가 N2을/를 V-게 하다’ is used, while with transitive verbs ‘N1 이/가 N2에게 V-게 하다’ is used.




• 선생님께서는 학생들을 10분 동안 쉬게 하셨어요.
The teacher made the students rest for 10 minutes.
• 아버지는 주희에게 손님들 앞에서 피아노를 치게 하셨어요.
Juhee’s father made her play the piano in front of the guests.
• 교수님은 학생들에게 금요일까지 숙제를 내게 하셨어요.
The professor had the students turn in their homework by Friday.

2. When -게 하다 is used after adjectives, it indicates that the subject causes another person to be in the state described by the adjective. In this case, the form N1 이/가 N2을/를 A-게 is used.
• 마크 씨는 질문을 너무 많이 해서 니를 귀찮게 해요.
Mark annoyed me (= made me feel annoyed) with all of his questions.
• 요즘 저를 우울하게 하는 일들이 많이 생겼어요.
A lot of things have happened recently to make me feel depressed.

3. This expression can also refer to a person either giving or not giving another person permission to do something. In this case, the 하다 part of ‘-게 하다’ actually carries the meaning of ‘허락하다’ (permit).
• 어머니는 아이가 하루에 한 시간 동안은 텔레비전을 보게 해요.
The mother lets her child watch TV for one hour a day.
• 부모님은 계가 밤늦게 못 나가게 하셨어요. 
My parents won’t let me leave the house late at night.

Note:
1. When used to indicate the prohibition of some action by somebody, the form 못 -게 하다 is used.
• 혜수 씨는 아이들이 아이스크림을 안 먹게 합니다. (X)
->혜수 씨는 아이들이 아이스크림을 못 먹게 합니다. (〇)
Hyesu doesn’t let the children eat ice cream.
• 언니는 전화할 때는 자기 방에 안들어오게 해요. (X)
->언니는 전화할 때는 자기 방에 못 들어오게 해요. (O)
When my big sister is on the phone, she won’t let anyone in her room.

2. Two variants of this expression, -도록 하다 and -게 만들다 can also be used to express the same meaning as -게 하다.
• 교수님은 학생들에게 책을 읽어 오게 하셨어요.
= 교수님은 학생들에게 책을 읽어 오도록 하셨어요.
The professor had the students read the book (before coming to class).
• 경민 씨는 아이가 혼자 밖에 못 나가게 했어요.
= 경민 씨는 아이가 5자 밖에 못 나가도록 했어요.
Gyeongmin prevented her child from going outside alone.
• 은혜 씨는 나틀 웃게 하는 사람이에요.
= 은혜 씨는 나를 웃게 만드는 사람이에요.
Eunhye makes me laugh.
• 그 직원은 아키라 씨가 새 휴대전화를 사게 했어요.
= 그 직원은 아키라 씨가 새 휴대전화를 사게 만들었어요.
That employee got Akira to buy a new mobile phone.

While the causative can be formed by either adding -이/히/리/기/우/추- or -게 하다 to verbs and adjectives, these forms are different in the following ways.
