고양시, 지속가능한 도시 2년 연속 아시아 1위 - Goyang named Asia's most sustainable city for 2nd straight year

경기도 고양시가 살기 좋은 친환경 도시 역량 종합평가에서 2년 연속 아시아 1위를 차지했다. The northern Seoul suburb of Goyang, Gyeonggi-do Province, has been named Asia's top eco-friendly city to live in for the second year in a row.

국제컨벤션협회(ICCA) 등 기구가 발표한 '2023년 지속가능한 글로벌 여행지 지수'(GDS-I) 보고서에서 고양시가 세계 주요 도시 100개 가운데 14위에 올랐다고 BBC방송이 2일(현지 시간) 보도했다.

The BBC on April 2 reported that Goyang ranked 14th among the world's top 100 sustainable cities in the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-I) produced by the International Congress and Convention Association.

이같은 순위는 유럽 도시를 제외하면 2년 연속 세계에서 가장 높은 위치다. 앞선 평가에선 비유럽도시 1위이자 세계 18위에 이름을 올렸다. 아시아태평양지역에서 고양에 이은 2위는 싱가포르로 전체 17위를 기록했다.

Goyang finished the highest among non-European cities in the index, repeating its feat last year when it came in 18th overall. Singapore at 17th was No. 2 in the Asia-Pacific region this year.

전체 1위는 스웨덴 예테보리였고, 노르웨이 오슬로, 덴마크 코펜하겐, 핀란드 헬싱키, 노르웨이 베르겐이 다음 순이었다. 모두 북유럽 도시들이다.

The top five cities in the latest GDS-I were all in Northern Europe (in order): Gothenburg, Sweden; Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; Helsinki, Finland; and Bergen, Norway.

GDS-I는 관광, 이벤트 산업 등의 지속 가능성 성과를 기준으로 전 세계 도시의 순위를 매긴다. 도시별 순위는 대기 오염 수준, 재활용 비율, 자전거 도로 수, 친환경 객실 비율 등 69개 지표를 기준으로 선정한다.

The GDS-I ranks global cities based on their sustainability performance in the tourism and event sectors. The rankings are based on 69 indicators such as air pollution, recycling rate, number of bicycle paths and percentage of eco-friendly hotel rooms.

고양시가 지난 2017년 한국 도시 최초로 GDS-I에 포함된 이후 순위가 매년 상승했다고 BBC는 소개했다. 그러면서 현재 고양의 컨벤션·전시 센터는 빗물을 재활용해 화장실, 연못, 정원에 사용하고 있으며 도시는 68개의 공원과 자전거 공유 제도를 갖췄다고 덧붙였다.

Goyang has "been climbing up the GDS-I rankings ever since" it became the first Korean city to join the index in 2017, the BBC said. The city has a convention and exhibition center that "recycles rainwater for the bathrooms, pond and gardens" as well as 68 parks and a bike sharing system, it added.
