한국, 식량위기 11개국에 쌀 10만t 지원 - 100K tons of rice to go to 11 nations with food shortages

한국이 식량위기국 난민과 취약계층을 위해 11개국에 쌀 10만t을 지원한다. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will send 100,000 tons of rice to countries suffering from food shortages for refugees and vulnerable groups.

농림축산식품부(이하 농식품부)는 유엔 세계식량계획(WFP, World Food Programme)을 통한 식량 원조 규모 확대 첫해를 기념하는 행사를 17일 전북 군산항에서 개최했다.

The ministry on April 17 held a ceremony at the Port of Gunsan in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do Province, to mark its first year of expanding the scale of food aid to developing economies via the United Nations World Food Programme.

한국은 지난 2018년부터 유엔식량원조협약에 가입해 매년 5만t의 쌀을 전달했다. 올해부터는 기존 지원 대상 국가에 방글라데시, 모잠비크, 시에라리온 등을 추가해 총 11개국에 쌀 10만t을 공급한다. 기존 물량에서 두 배 늘어난 양이다.

Since joining the UN Food Assistance Convention in 2018, Korea every year has sent 50,000 tons of rice in aid. The 100,000 tons this year, double the previous scale, will go to 11 recipient countries that includes former recipients in addition to Bangladesh, Mozambique and Sierra Leone.

이날 군산항에서 선적된 쌀 1만5000t은 오는 8월부터 방글라데시 콕스바자르 지역 및 바샨차르섬의 로힝야 난민에게 제공된다. 목포, 울산, 부산신항에서도 쌀 8만5000t을 실은 선박이 오는 6월 말까지 출항해 11개국에 순차적으로 지원된다.

The 15,000 tons shipped from Gunsan will arrive in August to benefit Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in the regions Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char. By late June, ships with 85,000 tons will leave the ports of Mokpo and Ulsan and Busan New Port to supply rice to the 11 countries.

송미령 농식품부 장관은 “우리나라는 반세기 만에 식량원조국에서 공여국으로 발전한 세계에서 유일한 국가로 식량원조 뿐만 아니라 케이(K)-라이스벨트 사업도 지속적으로 확대해 국제사회 일원으로서 역할과 의무를 다할 것”이라고 말했다.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Miryung said, "The Republic of Korea is the only country that has transformed itself from a recipient to a donor country in half a century. As a responsible member of the international community, we will make the utmost effort to fulfill our roles and duties by continuing to expand not only food aid but also the K-Ricebelt Project."

한편 농식품부는 쌀 생산 부족 문제를 겪고 있는 아프리카 국가를 위해 수확량이 높은 벼 종자를 생산하고 농가에 보급하는 K-라이스벨트 사업을 추진하고 있다. The project produces and distributes high-yielding rice seeds for supply to farmers in African countries struggling with rice shortages.
