Grammar Focus:
-지 않아도 되다 expresses that a particular state of affairs or behavior is not necessary and is the negative form of -아/어야 되다/하다 which expresses the obligation to perform a particular behavior. It corresponds to ‘does not have to’ in English. It is made by adding -지 않아도 되다 or 안 -아/어도 되다 to the verb stem.





Conversation:
A: 오늘 회식에 꼭 가야 돼요? Must I go to the dinner today?
B: 바쁘면 안 가도 돼요. If you're busy, you don’t have to go.

A: 저는 다이어트 해야 돼요! I’ve got to go on a diet!
B: 지금도 날씬해요. 다이어트하지 않아도 돼요. 
You’re already slender. You don’t need to diet.
