가: 아이가 뚱뚱하다고 친구들한테 놀림을 받아서요. 많이 먹지도 않는데 왜 그렇게 살이 찌는지 모르겠어요.
Kids tease my child about being overweight. He doesn’t eat a lot, so I wonder why he’s so big.

나: 줄리앙의 식습관을 보니까 인스턴트 음식을 많이 먹는 것 같습니다. 인스턴트 음식은 열량이 높기 때문에 비만을 유발하기 십상이에요.
Judging by Julien’s eating habits, it looks like he’s eating a lot of instant foods. Instant foods can easily trigger obesity because they’re high in calories.

가: 그래요? 그래도 어릴 때는 마른 것보다는 살이 좀 찐 게 낫지 않을까요?
Really? But isn’t it better to have a little extra weight than to be thin when he’s young?

나: 어린이 비만은 고혈압이나 심장 질환 등 성인병으로 이어지기 십상이기 때문에 어릴 때 비만을 치료하는 게 좋습니다.
Childhood obesity can easily lead to adult diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease, so it’s good to treat it while one is young.


This expression is used to indicate that under the current circumstances, it is easy for something to happen or that its occurrence is very probable. Here, the word 십상 has the same meaning as 십중팔구 (“eight or nine out of ten”). This expression only attaches to verbs.
정확한 지식이 없이 주식 시장에 투자를 하면 낭패를 보기 십상이다.
Failure in the stock market is very likely if you invest without accurate knowledge.

그 지역은 배수 시설이 좋지 않아서 폭우가쏟아지면 물에 잠기기 십상이다.
Because its water drainage facilities are poor, it is very likely that that area will become submerged under water in the event of heavy rain.

안 좋은 자세로 컴퓨터나 스마트폰을 오래 사용하면 목에 무리가 오기 십상이다.
If you use a computer or smartphone with bad posture for long periods of time, then you will very likely hurt your neck.

This expression is usually used when a negative result or situation is expected, therefore it sounds awkward when used to describe positive situations.

—> 최선을 다하다 보면 좋은 결과가 오기 마련이다. (〇)
