가: 부장님, 발표를 망쳐서 죄송합니다. 요 며칠 준비하느라고 밤을 새운 데다가 너무 긴장한 나머지 실수를 많이 한 것 같습니다.
Manager, I’m sorry for botching the presentation. I think I made so many mistakes because I stayed up late the last few nights preparing and because I was so nervous.
나: 버벅거린 거야 긴장을 많이 했기 때문이라고 쳐도 발표 내용은 왜 그렇게 엉망이었던 거죠? 제대로 준비한 거 맞아요?
You just mumbled your way through it because you were just really nervous. But why was the content of the presentation such a mess? Did you really prepare adequately?
가: 죄송합니다. 한 번만 더 기회를 주신다면 실수 없이 해 보겠습니다.
I’m very sorry. If you’ll give me just one more chance, I’ll try to do it without making any mistakes.
나: 이번에는 회사에 들어와서 처음 하는 발표라 실수 했다고 치고 기회를 한 번 더 줄 테니까 준비를 철저하게 해서 잘해 보세요.
I’ll assume that you made mistakes because it was your first presentation since joining the company, so I’ll give you one more chance. So please do it flawlessly.

1. This expression is used when acknowledging or assuming someone’s assertion or behavior or acknowledging or assuming that some situation exists. The following clause usually contains a rebuttal of the preceding clause or a description of a problem that arises if one acknowledges the preceding clause. It is mainly used in the forms -(느)ㄴ다고 치자(칩시다), -(느)ㄴ다고 쳐도 and -(느)ㄴ다고 치고. It can also be used in the form -(느)ㄴ다 치다 in which -고 is deleted.



가: 이번 휴가 때 미국에 가면 어때? 숙박은 미국에 있는 혜주네 집에서 해결되니까돈이 거의 안 들 거야.
How about going to the U.S. this coming vacation? We can take care of accommodations by staying at Hyeju’s house, so it won’t cost much at all.
나: 숙박은 혜주네 집에서 해결한다고 쳐도 미국까지 가는 비행기 표는 어떻게 마련할 건데?
Even if we take care of accommodations by staying at Hyeju’s house, how are we going to pay for the airline tickets to the U.S.?

가: 김 사장님이 물건 값을 깎아 주지 않으면 구입을 안 하겠다네요. 우리랑 거래도 오래하고 있으니 10%라도 깎아 줄까요?
President Kim is saying he won’t purchase unless we lower the product price. He has been doing business with us for a long time, so shall we lower the price by 10%?
나: 김 사장한테는 물건 값을 깎아 준다고 칩시다. 그럼 그 소문을 듣고 온 다른 고객들이 똑같은 요구를 할 경우 어떻게 할 겁니까?
Let’s assume that we agree to lower the price to President Kim. What are we going to do if our other clients catch word of it and demand the same thing?

2. This expression is used when assuming some action or situation or when hypothesizing it to be true. In this case, it is often used in the form -(느)ㄴ다고 치고. It can also be used in the form -(느)ㄴ다 치다,in which -고 is deleted.
가: 아빠, 우리 집은 교통이 안 좋아서 지하철역까지 10분 이상 걸어가야 해요. 아빠가 아침 마다 지하철역까지 태워다 주시면 좋겠어요.
Daddy, since the transportation from our house is so bad, it takes more than 10 minutes to walk to the station. I wish you would take me to the station in your car every day.
나: 남들은 살 빼려고 일부러 돈 내고 헬스클럽에도 가는데 너도 운동한다고 치고 그 정도 거리는 걸어 다니면 어떻겠니?
Other people pay money to go to the gym so that they can lose weight, so why don’t you just consider it exercise and walk?

가: 휴가철도 아닌데 이런 모텔이 하룻밤에 10만 원이나 한다니 정말 너무하네요.
I can’t believe this kind of motel charges 100,000 won a night even though it’s not even the vacation season.
나: 이 밤에 여기도 겨우 찾았는데 그냥 휴가철에 왔다 치고 마음 편하게 지내다가 갑시다.
We barely managed even to find this place, so let’s just say we came during the vacation season, stay here, and have a relaxing night.

Note:
1. When this expression is used in the sense described in 1. above, it is often used in conversation in the forms of 그렇다고 치자, 그렇다고 쳐도 and 그렇다고 치고 when both parties are already aware of or understand the situation or context being described.
어제는 비가 와서 그렇다고 치고 오늘은 왜 또 늦은 건데?
10년 동안 연락 한 번 없었던 건 그렇다고 쳐도 왜 날 보고도 모르는 척한 거야?

2. When used in the sense described in 2. above, this expression can be substituted with -는 셈치다 with no major change in meaning.
• 남들은 살 빼려고 일부러 돈 내고 헬스클럽에도 가는데 너도 운동하는 셈치고 그 정도 거리는 걸어 다니면 어떻겠니?
• 이 밤에 여기도 겨우 찾았는데 그냥 휴가철에 온 셈치고 마음 편하게 지내다가 갑시다.

3. This expression is also used when describing a situation that hasn’t occurred yet or when describing an imagined or hypothetical situation different from the current reality.
가: 관성 이 뭐예요? 예를 들어서 가르쳐 주세요.
What’s inertia? Please teach me with an example.
나: 네가 버스를 탔다고 치자. 달리던 버스가 갑자기 멈추면 앞으로 넘어지지? 그걸 관성이라고 하는 거야.
Let’s pretend you’re on a bus. If the moving bus suddenly stops, you fall forward, right? That’s what is called inertia.

가: 제품에 대해서 열심히 공부하긴 했는데 손님들이 오시면 잘 설명할 수 있을지 모르겠어요.
I’ve studied the product well, but I don’t know if I can adequately explain it to customers.
나: 그럼 내가 손님이라고 치고 제품에 대해서 설명해 보세요.
In that case, pretend I’m a customer and explain the product to me.
