가: 신문 기사를 보니 맞벌이 주부들이 참 힘들겠더라고요.
According to a newspaper article, it seems that dual-income housewives must really have a hard time.

나: 맞아요. 가족들과 직장 동료들의 이해와 도움이 없는 한 집안일과 직장 일을 동시에 잘 해내는 것은 무리이지요.
That’s right. As long as they don’t have the understanding and assistance of their families and work colleagues, it’s impossible to successfully work at one’s job while simultaneously doing household chores.

가: 다른 나라에 비해서 한국이 남녀 임금 격차가 큰 데다가 더 오랜 시간 일하기 때문에 더욱 힘들다고 해요.
It said that compared to other countries, not only is Korea’s wage gap between men and women large, but it’s also more difficult because Koreans work longer hours.

나: 여성이 일하는 것에 대한 사회적 인식이 개선되지 않는 한 저 같은 워킹맘들의 고민은 계속될 거예요.
As long as society’s view of women in the workplace doesn’t improve, working moms like myself will continue to suffer.

This expression is used to indicate that the preceding clause forms the premise or condition for the content in the following clause, it attaches to verbs only.


• 당신이 제 옆에 있는 한 저는 아무것도 두렵지 않아요.
As long as you are by my side, I’m not afraid of anything.

• 아무리 실력이 뛰어나도 영어 시험에 합격하지 않는 한 승진하기가 어려워요.
No matter how talented you are, as long as you don’t pass the English exam, it will be very hard to be promoted.

• 백 선생님은 앞으로도 건강이 허락하는 한 봉사 활동을 계속하고 싶다고 하셨어요.
Mrs. Baek said that as long as her health will permit her to do so, she would like to continue doing volunteer work.

While this expression is used in the form -는 한, the verb 관하다 is commonly used in the form -(으)ㄴ 한.
• 그 문제에 관한 한 현재로서 아무런 대답도 해 줄 수 없어요.
•조선 시대 풍습에 관한 한 김 교수님만큼 해박한 지식을 가지고 계신 분이 없을 거예요.

While this expression attaches only to verbs, there is an exception for the case of the adjective 가능하다 which is used in the form 가능한 한.
• 가능한 한 일찍 오세요.
• 가능한 한 빨리 끝냈으면 좋겠네요.
